Top 5: Premier League stars likely to be moved on in January

There are just five rounds of Premier League fixtures to play before the January transfer window opens for business.

Officially, the transfer window will open at midnight on Sunday 1st January and will remain open until around 11:00pm on Tuesday 31st January.

Over the summer, 13 top-flight teams broke their own transfer records as Premier League spending reached a record £1.165billion – with over £155million being spent on transfer deadline day alone.

This shattered last year’s record of £870million and with the new television deal that came into effect this season, we should be expecting more money to be splashed in the New Year.

Whilst this window won’t see quite as much money as was spent in the summer, it can be a lifeline for sidelined players that need a change of scenery. Clubs near the bottom of the table will also be looking for transfers that could turn their seasons around and some may even be looking for that one player in a position in which they have been lacking.

So, with the January transfer window fast approaching, which Premier League players could be on the move this winter?

Here are five players Shoot! think are likely to be on the move in January…

Saido Berahino

In recent years, Berahino has probably been one of, if not the, most talked about players when discussing a move away from a current club.

He still finds himself at West Brom, but needs a move now in his career more than ever. The 23-year-old has featured in just four league games this season and hasn’t been involved with the first-team squad since mid-October.

Possible destinations for the Englishman are Stoke, Watford and West Ham, but Tony Pulis might not want to give up on him just yet.

It was only a few years ago that Berahino looked like having a very promising career, but after recent events, it has all gone downhill rather rapidly.

Branislav Ivanovic

Just three years ago, Ivanovic was classed as one of the Premier League’s best right-backs but now, under Antonio Conte, the Serbian can’t really get anywhere near the starting eleven.

Now that the Italian manager has switched to a three-man defence, it is likely that this move will bring about the end of Ivanovic’s time at Stamford Bridge.

The 32-year-old only has a few months left on his contract and it might be for the best if he could agree a January move.

He will undoubtedly attract a lot of attention and even if no Premier League clubs were interested, clubs like Galatasaray or a Chinese Super League team could be a more likely destination.

Memphis Depay

Since his £26million move from PSV in the summer of 2015, Memphis Depay has failed to recreate his form that earned him the move and he will soon be heading out of Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old has just 22 minutes of playing time under Jose Mourinho in all competitions this year and has been a huge disappointment since his arrival.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman is interested in bringing the midfielder to Goodison Park on a loan deal, but United would probably prefer to move him on in a permanent deal.

Depay has said that he will try and fight for his place, but anything other than a permanent move away from Manchester at the moment seems highly unlikely.

Daniel Sturridge

Sturridge is yet to play 90 minutes in the Premier League for Liverpool this season and is struggling to win a regular place in Jurgen Klopp’s starting eleven.

His injury worries and the form of Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane are the main reasons that the England striker has seen most of the season from the bench and this is unlikely to change if things continue as they are.

At this stage a move away from Anfield would be doubtful but, if the right offer came calling, the 27-year old may just be tempted in order to secure consistent first-team football.

Bastian Schweinsteiger

Schweinsteiger is almost guaranteed a move away from Manchester United in the January transfer window having featured in only four minutes in all competitions this season.

Not only has the German international been excluded from the Europa League squad, but he has also been made to train with the reserves for the majority of the season.

The 32-year-old is one of the highest earners at the club and will be wanting to get back to playing first-team football on a more regular basis.

The midfielder has said himself that he will not play for another European club again, so the MLS could be a likely destination for the World Cup winner.
