Top 5: Premier League summer signings of 2018

With the FIFA World Cup in full swing and heading into the knockout stages, it is easy to forget just how soon the new 2018-19 Premier League season will be upon us!

The English top-flight returns on Saturday 11th August, with some tasty ties to kick start the campaign, including Arsenal versus defending champions Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium, Liverpool against West Ham United at Anfield and Leicester City travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United during the opening weekend.

To cure the boredom between the World Cup final and the start of the new Premier League season is the summer transfer window, which this year closes on Thursday 9th August at 17:00pm.

Supporters love a new mega money signing, in the hope they’ll inspire their team to silverware success, or guide their side to Premier League safety.

Arsenal have brought in right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner (Juventus) and goalkeeper Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen), whilst Cardiff City have made four signings upon their return to the Promised Land this term – Josh Murphy (Norwich City), Greg Cunningham (Preston North End), Alex Smithies (QPR) and Bobby Reid (Bristol City).

Germany goalkeeper Bernd Leno has joined Arsenal from Bayer Leverkusen for around £19.3m.

Leicester City have lured defenders Ricardo Pereira (FC Porto) and Jonny Evans (West Brom) to the King Power Stadium, Newcastle United have signed goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on a permanent deal from Sparta Prague and also brought in midfielder Ki Sung-yueng from Swansea City on a free transfer.

Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong has joined Southampton, Barcelona winger Gerard Deulofeu has agreed a permanent return to Watford and West Ham United have so far made three additions – Ryan Fredericks (Fulham), Issa Diop (Toulouse) and Lukasz Fabianski (Swansea City).

Anyway, with little over a month remaining, he flicked through each club’s additions so far this summer and picked out our Top 5 signings. Enjoy!

James Maddison (Leicester City)

Norwich City star James Maddison completed his move to Leicester City earlier this month in a deal worth up to £24m.

The England Under-21 international midfielder put pen to paper on a five-year contract at the King Power Stadium, after scoring 15 goals and providing 11 assists in 49 appearances in all competitions for Championship club Norwich last season.

Leicester fought off interest from Everton and Southampton to land the ex-Coventry City starlet.

Fred (Manchester United)

One of the most expensive summer signings, so far, is the £52m Manchester United splashed out on Brazil international Fred.

The 25-year-old signed a five-year deal at Old Trafford, following his transfer from Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk, where he netted four goals in 37 games last term.

Fred is currently on international duty with Brazil at the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia, despite yet making an appearance for his country, as Brazil face Mexico in the last 16 on Monday afternoon (15:00).

Rui Patricio (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers have brought in vastly experienced goalkeeper Rui Patricio from Sporting Lisbon.

The Portugal international shot stopper, who has played every minute of his country’s campaign at this summer’s 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia so far, joins Wolves on a free transfer after terminating his own contract with the Portuguese club.

The 30-year-old agreed a four-year contract at Molineux.

Rui Patricio won the 2016 UEFA European Championships with Portugal.

Mohamed Elyounoussi (Southampton)

A recent addition, Southampton moved swiftly to replace Dusan Tadic by bringing in Norway international star Mohamed Elyounoussi.

The 23-year-old agreed a five-year deal with The Saints on Friday, following his reported £16m move from FC Basel, after Serbia winger Tadic completed his £10m switch to Ajax earlier on in the week.

Elyounoussi, who has 16 international caps for Norway, scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists in all competitions for Basel during the 2017-18 campaign.

Naby Keita (Liverpool)

And finally, Liverpool’s capture of Naby Keita has finally been fully completed after announcing a deal had been struck to sign the RB Leipzig midfielder last August.

The 23-year-old has arrived at Anfield for a fee believed to be around £48m, and the Guinea international has been handed Steven Gerrard’s iconic No.8 shirt.

Keita spent last season with Leipzig, despite a deal being struck last summer, where he scored nine goals and set up seven further strikes in 39 games in all competitions for the Bundesliga club.

He is Reds boss Jurgen Klopp’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of fellow midfielder Fabinho from AS Monaco.
