Top 5: Premier League’s all-time appearance makers

Ahead of this weekend’s top-flight action, Shoot! looks through the record books to name the Top 5 Premier League appearance makers of all-time.

Can you name the Top 5? If not, let’s give you a helping hand, by ruling out some other high profile names.

At number six is former Leicester City, Liverpool, Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa striker Emile Heskey, who featured 516 times in the English top-flight.

Goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, 45, is seventh on the all-time list, having appeared 514 times in the Premier League for the likes of Leicester, Chelsea, Fulham and Middlesbrough.

Further down the list; at number eight, is Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, with 508 games under his belt during his 17-year career with The Reds.

Number nine is Phil Neville (505), who starred for Manchester United and Everton.

And finally, at number ten, is both defender Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United, Queens Park Rangers, West Ham United, Leeds United) and Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), who both played 504 times in the Premier League.

5. Gary Speed

With 535 appearances to his name, former Wales international Gary Speed is fifth on the all-time list, having featured for Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle United and Botlon Wanderers between 1992 and 2008.

Tragically the ex-Wales captain passed away in November 2011.

4. David James

At number four, and the most capped Premier League goalkeeper of all-time, is David James.

Having featured for Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham United, Manchester City and Portsmouth in the top-flight, the former England shot stopper amassed 572 matches in the top-flight, but never won the title.

3. Frank Lampard

Moving into the top three, and someone who lifted three Premier League titles, is Chelsea great Frank Lampard.

The 39-year-old played 609 times in the top-flight for The Blues, West Ham United and Manchester City, becoming Chelsea’s all-time top goalscorer in all competitions in the process.

2. Ryan Giggs

The one-club legend in this Top 5 feature is Manchester United great Ryan Giggs.

The Welsh wizard played 632 times in the Premier League for The Red Devils, lifting 13 titles, as well as many other major honours at Old Trafford, during his illustrious 23-year career.

1. Gareth Barry

And lastly, at number one, is current Premier League veteran Gareth Barry.

The 36-year-old currently has 636 Premier League outings to his name, whilst still starring for West Bromwich Albion this season, having made eight league appearances for The Baggies so far.

Midfielder Barry has played for Aston Villa, Manchester City, Everton and West Brom in the top-flight, lifting the 2012 title with City.

He could make his 637th Premier League appearance when West Brom host Manchester City on Saturday (15:00).
