Boxing Day’s football certainly threw up some shock results all across England!

With the family out of the way for another year and plenty of leftover food and drink, it was the perfect time to take stock of the latest Christmas, sit down, and not move for the entire day as football once again became the priority.

With results proving to be vital throughout this hectic winter schedule, struggling sides urgently needed to step up to the mark.

The first of many games to grace our screens over the festive and New Year period saw former England manager Sam Allardyce’s return to management, as he sat down in the Watford dugout to take charge of his Crystal Palace side for the first time since replacing Alan Pardew.

The rest of Boxing Day’s key fixtures included; David Moyes’ return to Old Trafford where Manchester United hosted Sunderland, a relegation six-pointer in the Championship as Rotherham United hosted Wigan Athletic and a top of the table clash in League Two between Plymouth Argyle and Wycombe Wanderers.

Shoot! looks at the five most shocking results from England’s top four leagues…

The League Two promotion contenders had been struggling in recent weeks, having only won once in their previous five fixtures prior to their clash against Colchester.

In their first meeting since December 2008, Craig Slater got the winner for the U’s in the 83rd minute. The result moves the visitors up three places to 10th in the league table.

It also means that Colchester have now picked up 13 from a possible 15 points in their last five league games.

Can Colchester kick on during the second half of the season and make a late promotion push?

Leyton Orient’s League Two campaign has started off very poorly. Orient was only out of the relegation zone on goal difference prior to their home fixture against Crawley.

The hosts went into half time 3-0 up courtesy of an early strike from Sam Dalby and a brace from Paul McCallum.

Crawley fought back in the second half. However, a Teddy Mezague own goal and Enzio Boldewijn’s third league goal of the season was not enough to prevent the hosts going three points clear of the relegation zone.

The result for Crawley moved them down three places in the league table to 14th. Orient went up two places to 19th.

Carlisle missed the chance to return to the top of League Two after drawing 1-1 away at out of form Crewe.

The hosts had lost their previous three games in the league but George Cooper’s goal on the edge of half time proved to be enough to get a well-earned draw.

Shaun Miller gave Carlisle the lead against his former side. The draw was not enough for the visitors to go above either of their promotion rivals Doncaster Rovers or Plymouth Argyle.

Newcastle United 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday pulled off the shock win on Boxing Day after beating league leaders and title favourites Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Glenn Loovens’ first goal in over three years proved enough to extend the Owls’ winning streak to four matches.

The defeat for the Magpies means that they have moved off the top of the Championship table; with Brighton and Hove Albion climbing above them after beating Queens Park Rangers 3-0 on Bank Holiday Tuesday.

The visitors remain in sixth place despite their huge upset on Tyneside.
