Top 5: Stars who could be Premier League-bound

The January transfer window is now open and many of the top clubs will undoubtedly be making some key additions to their squads, whether this is to help with a title push or purely for Premier League survival.

There is bound to be lots of activity over the next month and whilst the majority of deals will be completed by your average struggling side, there will be some transfers that get the pulses racing.

Last January; Premier League clubs spent £175m in January and the likes of Alexandre Pato, Giannelli Imbula, Lamine Kone, Mohamed Elneny, Oumar Niasse and Nordin Amrabat all transferred to the English top-flight from an international club.

This year will be no different as clubs look to strengthen their squads with the latest international talent and, in fact, there are already some done deals in place as champions Leicester City will be bringing in Genk midfielder Wilfred Ndidi and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have agreed a £27m fee for Palmeiras forward Gabriel Jesus.

There are plenty of rumours about which players might be securing a deal with a new club in the New Year, but here are five international superstars who Shoot! think could be on their way to the Premier League during the 2017 January transfer window…

Julian Brandt

Brandt must currently be one of the most scouted players in the world.

According to recent reports, scouts from Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham have all been to watch the 20-year-old forward in the last few weeks, with a whole host of other international clubs said to be interested as well.

The Bayer Leverkusen striker can play on either wing and can also be used as a central striker.

He is considered to be one of Germany’s finest prospects and has already been capped four times by his country, as well as featuring heavily in the younger international setup.

The youngster has scored twice and assisted six times in the Bundesliga this season and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are said to be in pole position to land the young German forward.

However, whilst this may be the case, they will undoubtedly need to be ruthless in the transfer market if they are hoping to secure his signature.

Nelson Semedo

Benfica full-back Nelson Semedo is a reported £35m target for Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. The youngster has spent his entire professional career at the Estadio da Luz and has made 42 senior appearances for the club to date.

Semedo would definitely be a great option for bolstering the Red Devils’ defence, having already scored and assisted on six occasions this season, only missing nine minutes of competitive football in both the Primeira Liga and the Champions League.

The right-back has established himself as one of the best young full-backs in Europe and is hotly tipped to become ‘the next Dani Alves’ with Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona also said to be interested in the 23-year-old.

It is looking likely however that he will link up with fellow countryman Mourinho at Old Trafford.

Should he secure this switch to Manchester, we may not see him in the Premier League until next season as he could remain at Benfica on loan as part of the deal.

Jese Rodriguez

Former Real Madrid forward Jese Rodriguez appears to have interested Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, having been told by Unai Emery at Paris Saint Germain that he can leave the French giants in January.

Many will be disappointed to see the Spaniard go, as he only signed a contract with the club until 2021 five months ago in a deal worth around £21m, but he has struggled for game time with Edinson Cavani leading their striking line-up.

AC Milan, Las Palmas and AS Roma are all interested in the forward, but the Premier League might appeal to Jese that bit more and Liverpool would be able to match his salary demands.

The 23-year-old would be a great addition at Anfield and with Philippe Coutinho ruled out through injury and Saido Mane set to be away on international duty at the African Cup of Nations this month, Klopp will definitely be looking to add to his striking options to help the club’s title push.

Franck Kessie

Having been dubbed the ‘next Yaya Toure’, Kessie is certainly one player who could be on his way to England during this transfer window.

The 20-year-old midfielder is currently playing for Serie A side Atalanta and has made a great start to the season, scoring seven goals and assisting twice in 17 games.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United are all said to be hopeful of signing the Ivorian, but it is Chelsea who are said to be leading the way for the youngster as they look to start spending the cash that they received for Oscar.

It has even been reported that the Blues have already had a £25m bid rejected by Atalanta, as the Italian side look to hold out for a bigger offer.

This is hardly surprising given how much interest has been generated in the player and with it seeming almost definite that Kessie will be playing in the English top-flight shortly, his new club would have to wait until after the 2017 African Cup of Nations to see him in Premier League action.

Marco Reus

German superstar Marco Reus is a potential target for Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal should Alexis Sanchez decide to leave the club over his contract dispute.

There is no doubt that Arsenal’s priority will be to extend the contract of the Chilean international, but they would be extremely reluctant to let him enter the final year of his contract with no agreement in place and they will ultimately face stiff competition from other teams, including those in the Chinese Super League.

The 27-year-old winger is currently at Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund and has 80 goals and 59 assists in 171 appearances for the club.

The ex-Borussia Monchengladbach player has scored more than 20 goals twice in his previous three seasons and already has four goals and six assists in only six appearances this season, since returning from injury.

Despite Reus’ contract running until 2019, he could certainly be tempted to the Emirates with the significant pay rise that is set to be available.
