Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku.

Rivals Manchester United spent big to snatch Everton hitman Romelu Lukaku for an initial £75m, whilst Tottenham Hotspur have left their transfer business late, despite sealing a club-record deal for highly-rated Colombia defender Davinson Sanchez from Ajax earlier this month.

So, with the window set to slam shut within the next few hours, here’s Shoot!‘s Top 5 Summer Deadline Day deals in Premier League history, just in case some clubs are looking for some inspiration before any last-ditch offers…

Wayne Rooney (Everton to Manchester United)

After breaking through phenomenally at Premier League rivals Everton, Manchester United secured the £27m signing of 18-year-old striker Wayne Rooney in August 2004.

The England international went onto become The Red Devils’ all-time leading goalscorer, surpassing the legendary Sir Bobby Charlton, before returning to his boyhood Toffees earlier this summer on a free transfer.

Rooney scored 253 goals in all competitions for United overall; winning five Premier League titles, three League Cups, the FA Cup, the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, among many other honours.

Claude Makélélé (Real Madrid to Chelsea)

In the summer of 2013, Chelsea landed France international Claude Makélélé from La Liga giants Real Madrid.

The defensive midfielder proved a huge hit at Stamford Bridge, winning two Premier League titles, two League Cups and the FA Cup, helping him become one of the greatest-ever players in his position, leading many fans and pundits alike to dub his forte as the “Makélélé Role”.

He left The Blues for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in July 2008.

Carlos Tevez (Corinthians to West Ham United)

Arriving at the Boleyn Ground on the same day as fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano, in August 2006, former Corinthians forward Carlos Tevez proved the better buy for The Hammers – especially in his final appearance!

Despite controversy overshadowing his move to West Ham, the striker is classed as a ‘legend’ by some sections of supporters after single-handedly saving Alan Curbishley’s side from relegation on the final day of the 2006-07 Premier League season.

Tevez scored the only goal at Old Trafford to defeat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford, before joining The Red Devils a few months later.

He netted seven goals in 29 games during his sole season for The Hammers.

Ashley Cole (Arsenal to Chelsea)

In the summer of 2006, Chelsea signed Arsenal defender Ashley Cole for just £5m, with centre-half William Gallas moving in the opposite direction – but it was The Blues who ultimately got the better deal!

During his incredible success at Stamford Bridge; the England left-back became one of the best full-backs in world football, lifting the Premier League title, four FA Cups, the League Cup, the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.

Cole was released by Chelsea in June 2014, before he joined Serie A side AS Roma, and then Los Angeles Galaxy in January 2016.

Mesut Özil (Real Madrid to Arsenal)

And finally, in September 2013, Arsenal splashed out a reported club-record £42.5m to land Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Özil.

The midfielder, who lifted the FIFA World Cup the following summer in Brazil, became the most expensive German footballer of all-time.

Having signed just Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini during the summer transfer window, manager Arsene Wenger left it til Deadline Day to delight all Gunners fans with a sensational swoop for the Madrid man, who has gone on to score 32 goals in 164 appearances in all competitions.

Özil has helped Arsenal lift the FA Cup three times (2014, 2015, 2017) during his time in North London, but was strongly linked with a move away from the Emirates this summer, with less than 12 months remaining on his current deal.
