Top 5: Young Premier League stars impressing on loan

Last season, clubs in the top-flight sent out just under 200 players on loan, with the vast majority of them going to the lower reaches of the English Football League.

As of 2016-17, FIFA have abolished emergency loans meaning that all transfers, temporary or otherwise, must be conducted during the transfer window.

So far this January, Oumar Niasse and Tom Cleverley have departed Everton on loan joining Hull City and Watford respectively and one player that has already impressed on loan this season is Chelsea defender Nathan Ake.

The young centre-back, who can play right across the back line, has been on three loans in as many seasons and has now been recalled to be incorporated into Antonio Conte’s first-team plans.

The Dutch international impressed at both Reading and Watford before developing himself further under Eddie Howe at AFC Bournemouth and has now earned his chance to impress at the highest level.

Ake is living proof that a loan move away from a parent club can be the most effective route to breaking into the first-team and the fact that he has managed to do this at a club like Chelsea – who have more than 35 players out on loan this season – is truly remarkable.

With this achievement in mind, here are five more young Premier League players that Shoot! think are currently impressing out on loan…

Jamal Blackman

Chelsea goalkeeper Jamal Blackman has just extended his loan spell with Wycombe Wanderers until the end of the season.

The goalkeeper has kept 11 clean sheets in 25 games for the League Two club since his initial loan move back in August and his spell of fine performances has ensured that he will remain at Adams Park during this campaign.

The 23-year-old has been praised for his performances in both the FA Cup and the Checkatrade Trophy, where he became a hero for the Chairboys by tipping Blackpool’s final penalty onto the post and sending Gareth Ainsworth’s side into the quarter-finals.

The Wycombe boss speaks highly of the Chelsea loanee and believes that Jamal’s quality is well above League Two level.

The young shot-stopper has made some world-class saves throughout the season and commands his box superbly.

To have these skills at such a young age is extremely impressive and, with Antonio Conte’s side being fairly well covered in this area, there will be plenty of clubs keeping an eye on his progress.

Josh Cullen

League One side Bradford City have extended West Ham United midfielder Josh Cullen’s loan spell at Valley Parade for the remainder of the season.

The young Hammers star first joined up with The Bantams for the second-half of last season and made quite the impression at the club.

He featured 17 times during 2015/16 and has gone on to make 23 appearances during this campaign, scoring his first professional league goal for the club in a game against Milton Keynes Dons.

Both former Bradford boss Phil Parkinson and current manager Stuart McCall have described the midfielder as an old head on young shoulders and have commented on his ability to find time on the ball, even when there is none.

The 20-year-old has a bright future ahead of him and has quickly become a fans favourite, with them even drawing comparisons between him and French legend Zinedine Zidane.

His popularity and all-round positive style of play bodes well for his chances of one day becoming a success under Slaven Bilic at the London Stadium.

Tom Lawrence

Leicester City striker Tom Lawrence is spending this season on loan with Ipswich Town.

The Welsh forward, who is currently enjoying his best campaign in professional football, has already made 20 appearances for the Tractor Boys.

He has five assists and five goals to his name, with the most recent of these coming in the form of a 30-yard screamer in a 3-2 win over Blackburn Rovers at Portman Road.

Lawrence knows the Championship fairly well after spending time on loan at both Blackburn and Cardiff City last year, after failing to break in to the Leicester first-team.

Former Foxes boss Nigel Pearson signed the 23-year-old from Manchester United in September 2014, but the move has never really worked out for him, with current boss Claudio Ranieri reportedly looking to move him out of the club for good.

This would pose a problem for Mick McCarthy as his side are currently mid-table and with Derby County, Norwich City and Reading all interested in the forward, Ipswich would not be able to compete for his signature.

Tammy Abraham

Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham is currently on loan with Championship side Bristol City in his first season away from his parent club.

The English forward has settled into life in the Championship fairly easily and netted three times in his first three appearances.

He has gone on to feature in every league game for his loan club this season and has scored 18 goals and assisted on three occasions during his time in Bristol.

After a good start to the season, The Robins have lost nine of their last ten games and despite the club currently being in this awful slump under boss Lee Johnson, the 19-year-old has continued to perform impressively.

If the Chelsea academy graduate can maintain this standard and keep up his remarkable goalscoring form, he could definitely become more involved with Antonio Conte’s first-team in the near future.

The young striker must have caught the eye of several managers up and down the country and he will certainly be a player to watch closely in 2017.

Calum Chambers

Having already shown promise with his parent club Arsenal, Calum Chambers is spending this season on loan at Aitor Karanka’s Middlesbrough and, according to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, the 21-year-old is getting better with each game.

The young English defender has played a big part in Boro’s season and has featured in a large majority of their games, proving his versatility at both right-back and centre-back.

As well as being strong in the air, the Southampton academy graduate always looks to keep his side moving forward in the game and is extremely comfortable on the ball.

Karanka’s side have kept seven clean sheets this season and five of these have been when the Arsenal loanee has started, which only further demonstrates the impact of his presence.

Chambers unquestionably has a big future under Wenger and after he returns to the club at the end of this loan spell, it will be interesting to see whether he can challenge Hector Bellerin for the starting right-back spot.
