Following a two-week break for international commitments, the Premier League returned to centre stage this weekend, as the top-flight table begins to fully take shape.

Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off between Manchester United and Arsenal at Old Trafford, which was billed as a reunion between bitter foes Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger, concluded in a 1-1 draw after Olivier Giroud’s late equaliser for the North Londoners cancelled out Juan Mata’s earlier opener for the Red Devils.

Elsewhere, Yaya Toure’s brace ensured Manchester City gained maximum points away against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, while Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool were held on their travels to a goalless stalemate at Southampton.

Everton salvaged a share of the spoils against rock-bottom Swansea City at Goodison Park. Seamus Coleman’s last minute leveller denied the side from South Wales a win after Gylfi Sigurdsson had dispatched a first-half penalty.

Sunderland climbed off the foot of England’s top division after putting three past fellow strugglers Hull City at the Stadium of Light. Jermain Defoe, who scored the 150th Premier League goal of his career, edged David Moyes’ team ahead, prior to Victor Anichebe adding a brace in the following half.

Current champions Leicester City continue to struggle in the defence of their title. The Foxes are 14th after going down 2-1 away to Watford at Vicarage Road. Goals from Etienne Capoue and Roberto Pereyra in the first 12 minutes had the hosts in the ascendancy. Riyad Mahrez pulled one back from the spot, but City’s indifferent form continues to persist.

Nathan Ake’s first-half header earned AFC Bournemouth a 1-0 win at Stoke City, a result that moved the Cherries up to ninth.

In Saturday’s evening game, Tottenham Hotspur defeated West Ham United 3-2 in an enthralling London derby at White Hart Lane. Harry Kane’s double, including an injury-time penalty, decided the contest in the Lilywhites favour.

Chelsea moved back to the summit of the standings on Sunday. Diego Costa’s 41st minute strike was enough to beat Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

Shoot! takes a look at what is hot, and what is not from the weekend’s Premier League action.

HOT: Harry Kane

Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane continued his resurgence in front of goal when he hauled his side to victory against West Ham United at White Hart Lane.

With Spurs trailing in the closing stages, the England international, aged 23, equalised from close-range with 89 minutes on the clock, in a tightly contested inter-capital affair.

Not content with only a point, Kane proved to be the hero of the hour during injury-time, when he converted his decisive spot-kick into the bottom left corner to complete the most of dramatic of turnarounds, and maintain Tottenham’s unbeaten league record.

Kane, who won the golden boot last season, with 25 goals to his name, has now scored five times in his last four top-flight outings.

Crystal Palace have lost five successive Premier League games in a row, following Saturday’s reverse against Manchester City at Selhurst Park.

The defeat against Pep Guardiola’s City was the latest in a catalogue of negative results. Palace have also been on the wrong side of score-lines against Burnley, Liverpool, Leicester City and West Ham United,

The South London outfit are 16th in the table, a point above the relegation places, having obtained 11 points from their 12 fixtures so far.

In a worrying run of form for Alan Pardew’s beleaguered Eagles, who find themselves firmly in a fight for survival, as the South London club aim to address the troublesome situation that is unfolding.

Palace have picked up just 22 points throughout their miserable calendar year, and visit Swansea City next Saturday.

HOT: Sunderland

Well, what a difference a fortnight makes!

Sunderland made it two wins on the spin at the Stadium of Light, comfortably beating Hull City 3-0.

The Black Cats had gone 11 matches without a win until the narrow triumph at AFC Bournemouth before the international break, but their latest victory over Hull lifts some pressure from the shoulders of manager David Moyes.

Veteran forward Defoe opened the scoring after 34 minutes, becoming the eighth player to reach the milestone of 150 career goals in the division.

In-form Anichebe extended Sunderland’s advantage in the second-half when he drilled in two goals of his own to confirm a first home win of the Premier League campaign.

Papy Djilobodji’s late red card didn’t unsettle the North East outfit, who face a trip to Anfield to play Liverpool next weekend.

NOT: Hull City

By contrast to Sunderland’s jubilance, for their opponents Hull City, it was a weekend to forget.

Mike Phelan’s men currently occupy a relegation place, having endured a tough afternoon on Saturday – a result which leaves them a point and a position behind West Ham United.

It has been a tough few months for the Tigers. Hull have won just once since August, and are in need of a positive upturn in fortunes sooner rather than later.

With mounting injury concerns, and uncertainty off the pitch with the club’s ownership, Hull have struggled since promotion back to the top-tier from the Championship under Steve Bruce in May.

Hull are next in action next Saturday, when they host West Bromwich Albion at the KCOM Stadium.
