Tottenham Hotspur reportedly had the chance to sign Spain international forward Marco Asensio, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Premier League side, who welcome league leaders Liverpool to Wembley Stadium this afternoon (12:30), were advised to take a closer look at the winger back in 2014 prior to his move to La Liga giants Real Madrid.

The 22-year-old, who has 17 international caps for his country, has provided three assists in four appearances in all competitions for Madrid so far this season.

Asensio has scored 21 goals in 95 first-team outings for the club overall since his transfer from Spanish rivals Mallorca nearly four years ago.

The report claims the Madrid forward was recommended to Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino by scout Ramon Planes, shortly after he took over the reins at White Hart Lane.

But, the Premier League side did not follow up his advise, nor did Madrid’s La Liga rivals FC Barcelona.

Asensio is now contracted at the Bernabeu until June 2023, and is said to have a release clause worth a staggering £442m.
