Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of sealing a loan deal for Benfica’s Gedson Fernandes, according to reports.

The 21-year-old has fallen out of favour at the Portuguese side this season, making just two league starts.

And Sky Sports report that the midfielder is set to become Jose Mourinho’s first signing as Spurs boss.

Mourinho is reportedly eyeing January signings.

It’s claimed Fernandes was in in London to complete a medical on Monday ahead of an 18-month loan switch.

If all goes well in the Premier League, Tottenham have the option of making the temporary deal a permanent one for £56million.

West Ham United were also thought to be in the race for the Portugal international but he instead opted to join the club managed by his fellow countryman.

Fernandes, who has played 59 matches for Benfica, will fill the void left by Moussa Sissoko, who will be out for up to three months after having surgery to the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.
