Chelsea earned their first victory of pre-season as they ran out 3-0 winners over Mexican side Club America on Thursday morning.
Enzo Maresca’s side had previously drawn with Wrexham and lost against Celtic, but a Christopher Nkunku penalty put them ahead against their Mexican opponents.
Striker Marc Guiu – a £5 million signing from Barcelona earlier this summer – then headed in their second, before Nkunku won a second spot-kick that was duly converted by Noni Madueke.
One player that wasn’t involved in the win was midfielder Conor Gallagher, who is returning late after representing England at the Euros this summer.
The Englishman is also believed to be on the verge of joining Spanish side Atletico Madrid, but Football Insider claims that Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to hijack the move.
Spurs have been heavily linked with a move for the midfielder during each of the past two transfer windows, and the report claims that the North London side are now planning to make a last minute attempt to steal the player away from Atletico.
Gallagher, 24, is one of a number of players to have progressed from Chelsea’s youth academy into the first team in recent seasons.
The central midfielder has played more than 90 times for the Blues across all competitions, and he captained the club on a number of occasions last season under Mauricio Pochettino.
Gallagher’s contract has less than 12 months remaining, though, and the club have therefore made the decision to allow him to leave in order to ease their profit and sustainability concerns.
The West London side are said to be demanding a fee in excess of £40 million for the England international, who played five times for the Three Lions at the Euros in Germany this summer.
