Manchester United have been handed a huge boost in their attempts to sign England international midfielder Eric Dier, according to the Daily Express.

The Red Devils, who finished sixth in the league standings last term, but lifted the UEFA Europa League and the EFL Cup, have been continuously linked with a move for the Tottenham Hotspur star this summer.

The 23-year-old, who has 19 international caps for The Three Lions, scored two goals and provided two assists in 48 appearances in all competitions for Spurs last season – who finished as runners-up behind Premier League champions Chelsea.

Dier, who arrived at White Hart Lane back in August 2014 following his move from Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon, has netted eight goals in 135 games overall for Mauricio Pochettino’s side since.

However, the report suggests the player wants to leave Tottenham for United this transfer window, with Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho keen on luring the defensive midfielder to Old Trafford ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.

‘The Special One’ wants to test Spurs’ resolve with a tempting £50m bid, with Dier understood to be excited at the prospect of working with the Portuguese.
