Tottenham beat Southampton 4-1 at St Mary’s on Wednesday to keep the pressure on the top four going into the final round of fixtures in 2016.

Spurs fell behind to Virgil van Dijk’s header just two minutes into the contest, but they hit back 17 minutes later when Dele Alli headed home Moussa Sissoko’s cross.

Striker Harry Kane thundered a header past Fraser Forster to give Mauricio Pochettino’s side the lead seven minutes after the break, and Spurs task became slightly easier when Nathan Redmond was harshly sent off for bringing down Alli.

Kane missed the resulting penalty, but late goals from Son Heung-min and Alli secured a tenth win of the season for Tottenham, who remain in fifth but are now just a point behind North London rivals Arsenal in fourth.

Pochettino’s side have won their last three league games, and go into their clash with league leaders Chelsea next week confident of recording victory over Antonio Conte’s men.

In what has been a great year for Tottenham, which has seen them record their best ever Premier League finish, we thought we’d take a look back at their 2016, and have thus identified their top THREE games of the year…

Tottenham went to Manchester City knowing that they needed all three points to keep the pressure on league leaders Leicester, who had earlier in the day lost away at Arsenal.

And they came away with a vital 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen.

Pochettino’s men took the lead when Kane fired home a penalty eight minutes into the second half after Raheem Sterling was harshly penalised for hand ball, yet the home side hit back when Kelechi Iheanacho equalised 16 minutes from time.

However, it was Spurs who had the last say as Danish international Eriksen slotted home seven minutes from the end to secure an integral win for Spurs, and their first at the Etihad in six years.

Spurs knew that they needed to beat Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United to remain seven points behind leaders Leicester but, for 70 minutes, it didn’t look like they were going to get the victory.

However, three goals in six minutes from Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld, and Erik Lamela blew away the Red Devils, who up until that point looked content with taking a draw back to Old Trafford.

It was also their first win over United at White Hart Lane for 15 years, and kept them in with a chance of securing their first league title in 55 years.

However, they ran out of steam and a 2-2 draw at Chelsea meant that Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes completed the unthinkable, and won the Premier League title.

It was a meeting between the top two in the Premier League back in October when Spurs met Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who up until that point had a 100% record in the league.

However, City were completely outplayed by Pochettino’s men, who secured a deserved 2-0 win to go within a point of Guardiola’s table-toppers.

Danny Rose’s cross after nine minutes was turned home by City defender Aleksandar Kolarov to give the hosts the lead, and they doubled their advantage when Dele Alli finished well eight minutes before the break.

It meant that Spurs remained the only unbeaten side in the league, which was a run that lasted 12 games and was ended by Chelsea on November 26.
