The FOUR LIONS – Shaun Ryder, Paul Oakenfold, Kermit and Goldie – this week announced the release of their rowdy terrace anthem, ‘We Are England’.

Following that announcement and the media excitement surrounding the track being revealed, the band have now delivered a superb video to support the release and to launch England’s Euro 2016 dream of glory. Will it be 50 years of hurt, or will we see a nation celebrating together come July 10?

Kicking off with those evocative 90s rave keyboard stabs, the video for ‘We Are England’ perfectly illustrates our diverse, working class nation coming together in anticipation of what might be! Shot on the streets of Manchester and London, with ‘Oakie’ and Goldie being shot in LA and Thailand respectively – and projected onto walls in the clip – the video features all four ‘Lions’ as well as a suitably Mondays-esque cameo from Bez and a not-so-obvious appearance from Scottish literary legend Irvine Welsh…..whose cameo was shot at manager Alan McGee’s home in Wales.

Shaun said about the video: “Hopefully our song and the video will send out a positive vibe to the England fans and put a smile on their faces. We made this for the real heroes of our country, the working men and women of England.”

‘We’re England ‘til we die’, bellows out Shaun William Ryder throughout the record – in his own unmistakable style – with typically manic vocal interjections from Black Grape collaborator Kermit, and Goldie adding his usual frisson of vocal menace to the proceedings. ‘We Are England’ takes classic elements of the British alternative music scene and adds a typically quirky lyrical approach to this nation’s beautiful tradition of the football tournament anthem.
