Wenger should give these 3 Arsenal players a chance against Swansea

Arsenal travel to Swansea City on Saturday (3pm kick-off) hoping to record their first Premier League away victory since the start of December.

Arsene Wenger’s men thumped West Ham 5-1 at the London Stadium on December 3, but since then have lost at Everton and Manchester City, and also drew 3-3 at Bournemouth in their last away league outing.

However, the Gunners did beat Preston 2-1 at Deepdale in the third round of the FA Cup last weekend, and they’ll be confident of returning to Premier League action with three points at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.

That’s because Paul Clement’s Swans are second-bottom in the Premier League having won just four of their 20 league matches, although they did beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in their last league game.

Saturday will see Clement take charge of his first home match since replacing Bob Bradley in the Swans hot-seat, and he’ll know that victory over Wenger’s men could take them out of the bottom three.

On what could be a tricky afternoon for Arsenal, Wenger could make a few changes to the side that struggled past Preston last weekend, so here are THREE Gunners players who deserve a chance against Swansea…

Rob Holding

There are still concerns about Arsenal’s defensive abilities, having seen Championship side Preston get at them with relative ease in their FA Cup third round clash last weekend.

Add in that they have conceded seven goals in their last three Premier League away games, and Wenger must be considering a shake up at the back.

One man he could turn to is Rob Holding, who the Gunners signed from Bolton last summer, but has made just three league starts thus far.

The 21-year-old may have struggled at the start of the campaign, but more time on the training field with his teammates and the manager will undoubtedly make him a better player, so he could be given an opportunity at Swansea on Saturday.

Lucas Perez

Arguably one of Arsenal’s better players over the festive period, Lucas Perez deserves to retain his place in the starting eleven against the Swans.

The Spaniard impressed in their 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day, before firing home his first Premier League goal in emphatic fashion against Bournemouth a few days later.

Perez was also their best player against Preston last weekend, getting the assist for Olivier Giroud’s 89th-minute winner, and he is clearly growing in confidence the more he plays, and thus should get another start against Swansea on Saturday.

Danny Welbeck

Arsenal received a massive boost when Danny Welbeck returned from an eight-month injury lay-off as a second half substitute against Preston last weekend.

The England international injured his knee back in May against Manchester City and hadn’t featured for the Gunners at all before Saturday’s clash at Deepdale, and his return will feel like a new signing and give everyone at the club a huge boost.

The 26-year-old will give Wenger another forward option for the second half of the season, and he could be in line to make his first Premier League appearance of the campaign at Swansea.

If he’s fit and ready, Welbeck should certainly get some minutes on the pitch, as he is a difficult forward to defend against because of his pace and strength, and indeed the energy he brings to the team.
