Wenger should give these 3 Arsenal stars a chance against Stoke City

Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal travel to Stoke City on Saturday (5.30pm kick-off) hoping to keep the pressure on the Premier League’s top four.

The Gunners recorded their second successive victory by beating Southampton 2-0 at St Mary’s on Wednesday night, with second half goals from Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud firing the visitors to a vital three points on the South Coast.

And they’ll go in search of a third straight win at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday against a Stoke side that mathematically secured their Premier League status last weekend.

Mark Hughes’ side drew 2-2 at Bournemouth to move seven points clear of the bottom three with just two games of the season remaining, and they’ll still be hoping to seal a fourth consecutive top-half finish in the Premier League over the coming weeks.

The Potters are 13th in the division but just a point adrift of Southampton in tenth, so know two wins from their final two games would likely secure them another top ten place.

Nonetheless, Arsenal will go in as favourites on Saturday, yet Wenger may decide to make some changes given that they have another game against Sunderland to come on Tuesday.

Thus, here are THREE Arsenal stars who deserve a chance against Stoke…

Hector Bellerin

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain hobbled off with a hamstring problem in their win over Southampton on Wednesday, and doesn’t look like taking any further part in the season.

Yet the Gunners have a ready-made replacement at either right-back or right wing-back in the form of Hector Bellerin.

The Spain international has struggled for starts in recent weeks such has been Wenger’s use of Oxlade-Chamberlain as a wing-back, although he did do well in their 1-0 win over Leicester a few weeks ago, his only start since the middle of April.

However, Bellerin looks like returning to the fold against Stoke as the Gunners chase a third straight win.

Olivier Giroud

Frenchman Olivier Giroud came off the bench to score the second at St Mary’s on Wednesday, and must be close to dethroning Danny Welbeck from the main striker’s role.

England star Welbeck didn’t have the best of evenings on the South Coast and thus failed to back up his fine display against Manchester United, and with Giroud bagging his tenth Premier League goal of the season on Wednesday, Wenger must have some thinking to do.

Against a strong and powerful Stoke defence, he’s unlikely to lead the line with Alexis Sanchez, so the decision will probably be between Welbeck and Giroud for the forward role, of which the latter may well get the nod.

Theo Walcott

Theo Walcott’s excellent season at Arsenal appears to have got lost in the few woeful displays he has produced this term, yet a return to the starting line-up could be in the offing at the bet365 Stadium.

The 28-year-old has bagged 19 goals in all competitions this season but hasn’t started for the Gunners since their 1-0 win over Leicester on April 26, and has only come off the bench once since then as well.

It appears that he isn’t a first choice in Wenger’s 3-4-3 system at present, but with another game coming on Tuesday, the Arsenal boss may decide to recall Walcott against Stoke.
