Wenger should give these 3 Arsenal stars a chance against Tottenham

Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal make the short journey to White Hart Lane on Sunday to face Mauricio Pochettino’s second place Tottenham in the North London derby (4.30pm kick-off).

The Gunners reached the FA Cup final last weekend after coming from behind to beat Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley, a day after Spurs were knocked out of the competition at the hands of Premier League leaders Chelsea.

And Wenger’s men backed up that victory with an equally-important one over Leicester in midweek, a result which keeps their top four hopes alive as the two Manchester clubs played out a goalless draw at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night.

It means that Arsenal are sixth in the table and just five points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s City in fourth, although they do have a game in hand on the Citizens as Wenger looks to secure a 21st successive top four finish in the Premier League.

Although to do that they could really do with doing something no side has managed this season – beat Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Pochettino’s side have taken 47 points from a possible 51 at home this term, with only Liverpool and Leicester getting anything from their travels, and it’s form that has inspired their late title charge.

However, Arsenal will be confident after some good results, yet Wenger could make a few changes to his side after a busy few weeks.

Thus, here are THREE Arsenal stars who deserve a chance against Tottenham in the North London derby…

Mohamed Elneny

The midfield duo of Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele are arguably the best in the Premier League, as between them they possess everything a central midfield partnership needs to be successful in this division.

And that could force Wenger to recall Mohamed Elneny against Pochettino’s side on Sunday, as the Egypt international has the strength to go toe-to-toe with that Spurs duo.

The 24-year-old has struggled with injury in his first season at the Emirates, but his 14 Premier League appearances have shown Gunners fans that he has got the capabilities to be the main man in that midfield area.

Granit Xhaka and Francis Coquelin got the nod against Leicester, yet with the latter not having his greatest season, and question marks still hanging over Xhaka’s discipline, the calming influence of Elneny may be crucial in the North London derby on Sunday.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

England star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was the man-of-the-match against Manchester City in their FA Cup semi-final last weekend, but he did pick up a slight knock against the Citizens and thus lost his place against Leicester in midweek.

However, the 23-year-old’s impressive displays in recent weeks suggests that it is likely he’ll return against Spurs on Sunday, especially if Wenger persists with three at the back at White Hart Lane.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was excellent as a wing-back in both attacking and defensive capacities against City, with he providing the most deadly crosses of any Arsenal player at Wembley, and ultimately the one that led to Nacho Monreal’s equaliser.

His incredible energy and desire to get up and down the flanks will be invaluable against a pacey and energetic Tottenham side, so expect him to return on Sunday.

Danny Welbeck

Danny Welbeck made a good impact when coming off the bench against City last weekend, but wasn’t rewarded with a start against Leicester in midweek.

However, Wenger may well have been resting him ahead of Sunday’s North London derby as Arsenal look to close the gap on the top four.

The England international only returned from a long injury lay-off back in January but has since then made ten Premier League appearances, and scored three goals in all competitions.

Welbeck gives Arsenal an outlet with his pace and strength, and he’ll certainly give the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen issues should he get the nod on Sunday.
