West Ham United’s top 3 stars over the international break

It’s not been the start to the season, and indeed the new era at the London Stadium, that Slaven Bilic and West Ham fans would have been hoping for.

The Hammers have laboured to just three wins from their opening 11 matches, and currently sit just a point and a place above the relegation zone.

However, it was a lot worse for Bilic’s side little over a month ago, given that they had won just one of their first seven games, but victories over Crystal Palace and Sunderland calmed some fears around the London Stadium.

Despite those wins, West Ham are still struggling to get the victories needed to move away from the bottom three, and they go to unbeaten Tottenham on Saturday looking to try and register an unlikely win.

Although their league form hasn’t been great, the Hammers are into the last eight of the League Cup following a 2-1 success over Chelsea in the last round, and they will go to Manchester United in a fortnight’s time looking to book their spot in the semi-finals.

Yet, international football has taken over the football calendar in the past fortnight, and many West Ham players were called up to their national teams for important World Cup qualifiers, but who performed the best?

Here are THREE West Ham players that starred for their country in recent weeks…

Darren Randolph

Darren Randolph had to be at his best to help the Republic of Ireland pick up a brilliant 1-0 win in Austria on Saturday.

The shot-stopper made a smart save to deny Marc Janko as the hosts looked to turn the screw, but the West Ham goalkeeper remained solid throughout to keep a second clean sheet in qualifying.

The result means that Martin O’Neill’s side top Group D, and Randolph will have an important part to play between the sticks as Ireland look to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 2002.

Aaron Cresswell

It’s taken a while for Aaron Cresswell to be recognised by England, but he finally has a cap under his belt.

The West Ham defender, who has missed a large chunk of the season through injury, made his debut as a second half substitute against Spain on Tuesday, and performed reasonably well at left-back.

With Ryan Bertrand currently injured and Luke Shaw’s Manchester United future uncertain, Cresswell is up against Danny Rose in the battle for the left-back berth and, based on what we have seen of Cresswell this season and indeed last time out, he’s more than capable of nailing down the number one spot.

Dimitri Payet

Dimitri Payet was instrumental in France’s 2-1 win over Sweden in Paris on Friday night, in what was an emotional occasion at the Stade de France.

The game marked the one year anniversary of the atrocities in the French capital, and a minute’s silence was held to remember the 130 victims of the attacks.

On the pitch, it was Payet who produced a man-of-the-match display, first setting up Paul Pogba with a wonderfully weighted free-kick, and then getting himself on the scoresheet eight minutes later.

It goes without saying that the Frenchman will be key for the Hammers this season and, based on his brilliant display on Friday, they could struggle to keep hold of him in January.
