It’s been quite a quiet start to the January transfer market in the Premier League. In the current day and age, prices for players are shooting through the roof and clubs will be working hard behind the scenes to bargain for new arrivals.

The only three major coups up to this point in the English top-flight are, believe it or not, Everton’s acquisition of Manchester United’s Morgan Schneiderlin and investment in promising Charlton forward Ademola Lookman, plus Middlesbrough’s signing of talisman Rudy Gestede from Aston Villa.

However, there is still plenty of time left this month for players to start arriving in the Premier League on mass.

Everton may be one of only a couple clubs to splash some cash so far, but fans are still hoping that Ronald Koeman can attract some bigger names than 19-year-old Lookman.

HOT: Depay

Progressions over Memphis Depay’s future at Manchester United became more evident on Friday with news that Lyon had a bid in the realms of £13m rejected.

The Red Devils have made it clear that the Dutch winger is free to leave, but have not had their valuation met.

Meanwhile, it’s all gone quite on the Everton front. It was hotly rumoured that Ronald Koeman was planning a move for Depay this month. Howerver, there has not been any serious moves from the club.

The fact that the Blues are losing interest in Depay will not disappoint many Toffees’ fans.

On social media, there is much more of a reaction surrounding names such as Vrigil van Dijk and Gylfi Sigurdsson, whereas any mention of Depay is soon blown away.

The United man has been underwhelming for the club and Everton fans are not convinced he would suddenly be able to make an impact on Merseyside.

It’s fair to say that if Depay moves to Lyon, Everton fans will not be in mourning.

NOT: Deulofeu

Italian giants AC Milan are refusing to give up their pursuit of Everton winger Gerard Deulofeu.

The Spaniard has failed to maintain a starting role this year under Ronald Koeman and there are mutterings that he is wanting a move away from Goodison.

Everton are reluctant to let the tricky winger go on a short-term basis, but if Milan came in with a large enough fee, then the Toffees board might just be willing to part ways with Deulofeu.

That would be a major shame. The 22-year-old can blow a little hot and cold but, on his day, he is right up there with the best wingers in the league.

He can turn defence into attack in a matter of seconds and has enough tricks to fool any defender.

Furthermore, his crossing is pin-point accurate, he is a dead-eye from free-kicks and has built a strong relationship with frontman Romelu Lukaku.

With Yannick Bolasie also out for the rest of the season, it would be a great shame if Koeman was to allow the starlet to leave.

HOT: Berahino

It seems impossible to have a transfer market in England without Saido Berahino causing some sort of fracas at West Brom.

The striker has been wanting away from the Midlands club for a long while now, and with his contract expiring in the summer, the club may well be looking to offload him now in order to cash in.

Everton are one of three clubs said to be interested in the 23-year-old, with Stoke City and Crystal Palace also sniffing around.

If Berahino was given permission to leave, you’d have to think that the Toffees would beat the other two sides to securing his signature.

Berahino is strong, quick and prolific and with Romelu Lukaku being Everton’s only real option up top, his potential arrival couldn’t be at a better time.

NOT: Belfodil

Belfodil (Right)

Who? Ishak Belfodil is the latest name to be linked with Everton.

Belfodil is a striker who plays for Standard Liege and is said to be worth in the realms of £10m.

The 24-year-old has already played for a number of clubs including Lyon, Bologna, Parma, Inter Milan and a couple in the United Arab Emirates.

It seems as if the striker has never settled, which is a worry when investing over £10m in a player.

Furthermore, his record of nine goals in 21 appearances for the Belgian side is not wholly impressive given the gap in quality between the Belgian league and the Premier League. Nonetheless, he is rumoured to be on his way to England for a medical at the club.

It would be frustrating to see Everton make the same mistake they did this time last year with Oumar Niasse.

Koeman would be better off spending the money on a player who is guaranteed to make some sort of impact, rather than throwing a good chunk of his spending allowance down the drain on a relative unknown.
