What’s Hot and What’s Not from an enthralling Premier League weekend

Premier League leaders Chelsea took a step closer to the title on a weekend which saw Sunderland’s ten-year stay in the top-flight come to an end.

Antonio Conte’s Blues eased past Ronald Koeman’s Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park on Sunday to temporarily move seven points clear of Tottenham, yet Mauricio Pochettino’s men responded in perfect fashion with a routine 2-0 win over North London rivals Arsenal at White Hart Lane.

And it means that, with just four games of the season remaining, the gap between the top two is just four points, yet Spurs will have the chance to cut that gap again with victory over West Ham on Friday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool consolidated their place in the top four with a 1-0 success over Watford on Monday night, Emre Can netting a goal of the season contender at Vicarage Road, while fourth place Manchester City dropped points away at struggling Middlesbrough, drawing 2-2 at the Riverside Stadium.

Neighbours Manchester United also failed to grab all three points on Sunday after drawing at home to Swansea, their tenth draw of the campaign at Old Trafford this term, while the aforementioned defeats for Arsenal and Everton has all but ended their top four challenges.

At the bottom, Sunderland were officially relegated from the top-flight after their defeat at home to Bournemouth, coupled with Hull’s 0-0 draw at Southampton, saw them fall 13 points adrift with just four games of the campaign remaining.

However, there were huge victories for Leicester and Burnley in their quest to avoid the drop, beating West Brom and Crystal Palace respectively on Saturday, while the other clash of the weekend saw Stoke and West Ham play out a bore draw at the bet365 Stadium.

So, on what was a frantic Bank Holiday weekend of action in the top-flight, here is What’s Hot and What’s Not from the last few days in the Premier League…

HOT – The title challengers

Chelsea and Tottenham once again proved why they are comfortably the best two teams in the Premier League with convincing victories over sides chasing European football next season.

Conte’s Blues breezed past Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park in a game many thought could spell trouble for the West London outfit, yet a wonder strike from Pedro as well as goals from Gary Cahill and Willian secured a routine victory for the visitors.

However, the pressure didn’t get to Pochettino’s Spurs who kicked off just half an hour later at White Hart Lane, as they comfortably saw off a below-par Arsenal 2-0 in what will be the last North London derby at the famous old ground.

Dele Alli and Harry Kane both netted as Tottenham demonstrated the sort of mental toughness which hasn’t always been evident in recent seasons, and they’ll have the chance to cut the gap to just one point should they beat West Ham on Friday night.

Ultimately though, this weekend proved how far ahead these two sides are, and how far they have come in the last 12 months or so.

NOT – Those chasing a top four place

Liverpool are now odds-on favourites to secure a Champions League spot after beating Watford 1-0 on Monday, yet the other sides chasing a top four place endured disappointing weekends.

Pep Guardiola’s City twice had to come from behind to draw 2-2 away at second-bottom Middlesbrough, a side who up until that game had netted just 24 times in the league this term, while earlier in the day Manchester United drew for a tenth time at Old Trafford this season after Gylfi Sigurdsson’s stunning free-kick earned Swansea a deserved point in the North West.

And Arsenal and Everton both saw their top four chances all but end with defeats on Sunday afternoon – they’ll likely have to settle for a place in the Europa League next term.

It was a great weekend for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, but other than that, those other sides trying to clinch a Champions League spot didn’t take any advantage of the others’ slip-ups this weekend.

NOT – Sunderland

It was inevitable, but Saturday finally saw David Moyes’ Sunderland officially relegated from the Premier League after a decade-long spell in the top-flight.

The Black Cats meekly lost 1-0 at home to Bournemouth and, coupled with Hull’s draw at Southampton, means that they are 13 points adrift of safety with just four games of the season remaining.

The North East outfit have been clinging on for years and producing miraculous escapes for a while now, so relegation was always going to happen, it was just a matter of when.

And it has happened this season for the Stadium of Light faithful, who will have quite the battle on their hands to achieve an immediate return to the Premier League next season.

HOT – Emre Can and Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool saw both City and United draw on Sunday prior to their clash with Watford on Monday, giving them a great opportunity to open up a gap in the race for a top four place.

And although they were far from convincing, they got the job done at Vicarage Road thanks to a moment of absolute brilliance from midfielder Emre Can.

The Germany international has played a prominent role in Klopp’s midfield in recent weeks, but not many could have foreseen what he was going to do on the stroke of half time on Monday, as the 23-year-old produced an unbelievable bicycle kick from a Lucas cross to give the Reds the lead.

It was a goal worthy of winning any game, and that’s how it turned out as Klopp’s men opened up a four-point gap to fifth place United with just three games remaining.
