What’s Hot and What’s Not from Chelsea’s season so far

Chelsea look to be storming towards the Premier League title having won 19 of their 25 league games this season.

The Blues were ninth after their 3-0 loss to Arsenal back on September 24, but since then have won 16 of their 19 matches, and opened up an eight-point lead at the top over nearest challengers Manchester City.

Antonio Conte’s men embarked on a 13-match winning streak between October and January, matching the record set by Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ back in 2003/04, but Tottenham made sure that they didn’t beat it with a 2-0 victory at White Hart Lane.

Nonetheless, that is one of just three defeats the Blues have suffered in the league this term, and given that they are also comfortably into the last eight of the FA Cup, the domestic double is very much on for the West London side.

Clearly, it has been an excellent season at Stamford Bridge, and given that Chelsea are currently embarking on a week’s break between matches, we thought we’d take a look back at their campaign thus far.

So, with that in mind, here is What’s Hot and What’s Not from Chelsea’s season so far…

HOT – Champions-elect

It would take something rather special, or indeed quite the choke from Chelsea, for the Blues not to be named Premier League champions come May.

Conte’s men are eight points clear at the top after winning 19 of their 25 league games this term, including 13 in a row from October to January.

Eight points may seem possible to overcome, but when you consider that the Blues have dropped just seven in their last 13 games, it’s going to be a tough ask for second place Manchester City, who themselves aren’t exactly unbeatable.

Best home record in the division, joint-best away record in the division – it all points to a fifth Premier League for Chelsea in the last 12 years.

HOT – They look unstoppable

As aforementioned, eight points isn’t an unassailable lead and titles have been won from further back before, but Chelsea look unbeatable at the moment.

Conte’s men have only lost three times this term, two of which came in their first six games of the campaign, and they have only dropped four points against sides in the bottom 14 of the league, drawing 2-2 at Swansea in September, and then 1-1 at Burnley last week.

Thus, with just two of the top six left to play, and their record against the rest what it is, it’s difficult seeing them losing those three or four games which would keep Man City in the hunt.

One defeat in the league since September 24, having played 17 of the 20 Premier League sides in that time – they look unstoppable, and are marching towards another league title.

NOT – Arsenal 3-0 Chelsea

There really aren’t many negatives of the Chelsea season so far, with their spell of just one point from a possible nine back in September about as bad as it has got, most notably the defeat at Arsenal.

Conte’s men could only muster a 2-2 draw away at Swansea on September 11, with a few defensive errors costing them that day, before they went down 2-1 at home to Liverpool five days later.

However, it was their display at Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal which concerned many Blues fans at the time, as they were comprehensively outplayed by the Gunners, conceding all three goals before the half time whistle.

Chelsea looked disorganised at the back and didn’t post a genuine attacking threat for much of the game, there were even rumours that Conte was going to get the sack in the week after that loss.

We are clearly knit-picking, as the Blues are well clear at the top and have lost just once since then, but their defeat at the Emirates back in September was certainly a low point, but one that has arguably made their season what it is, as Conte changed things completely after that game, and they’ve been sensational ever since.

HOT – Every player has been outstanding

Some would argue that Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku have carried Arsenal and Everton respectively, yet it’s difficult to pinpoint one player as the reason for Chelsea being at the top.

That’s because every single player who has donned the blue of Chelsea in the last few months has played at their peak, and sometimes gone beyond that.

From Thibaut Courtois, who of course made that stunning save to deny Patrick van Aanholt at Sunderland in December, all the way through to Diego Costa, who has scored 15 league goals so far, they have all performed.

The back three of David Luiz, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Gary Cahill have been magnificent, adapting to the back three role with ease, while the wing-backs of Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses have been outstanding, the latter particularly has been a revelation after a few years in the wilderness.

N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic are arguably the best central midfield pairing in the Premier League, with Kante picking up where he left off with Leicester, and Matic re-discovering his 2014/15 form, while the front three of Costa, Eden Hazard, and Pedro or Willian have netted 36 goals between them, and laid on 14 assists.

Conte deserves enormous credit for turning things around after a shaky September, and it looks like he will get the ultimate reward – the Premier League title.
