What’s Hot and What’s Not from Manchester United’s Europa League campaign

Manchester United reached the last 32 of the Europa League following a comfortable 2-0 win over Ukrainian side Zorya Luhansk on Thursday.

Jose Mourinho’s men knew that a draw would be enough to see them through, but goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan – his first for the club – and Zlatan Ibrahimovic sealed their place in the knockout stages.

Fenerbahce’s 1-0 at Feyenoord means that they top the group with United in second, and Mourinho’s men will be unseeded in Monday’s draw for the last 32, meaning they could play any of the group winners.

Nonetheless, the improving performances must please United fans, who saw their side win all three games at Old Trafford, and end a three-year wait without an away win in Europe at Zorya on Thursday.

Things are definitely looking up for Mourinho and his side, and they’ll hope to take that confidence from Thursday’s win into their crucial Premier League clash with Tottenham on Sunday.

In what has been a testing group for United, here is What’s Hot and What’s Not from their Europa League campaign thus far…

HOT – They’re through

Many may see Manchester United’s name in the Europa League and just expect them to cruise through, but this group provided them with a stern test.

And it’s one they have passed with relative ease in the end.

Mourinho’s men have won all three of their home games, scoring nine goals in the process, and picked up their first away win in Europe in over three years in Zorya on Thursday.

However, two defeats at Feyenoord and Fenerbahce, both of which a result of poor displays, put United’s qualification into doubt, but four wins and two draws was more than enough for a place in the last 32 in the end, as they finished five points clear of third place Feyenoord.

NOT – Two away defeats

Up until Thursday evening, United had not won any of their last nine European away games, and that’s not form that’s going to win you the competition.

David Moyes’ United beat Bayer Leverkusen 5-0 in November 2013, but since then the Red Devils have had a miserable time of it on the road, and it showed again in this campaign.

They laboured to a 1-0 loss in Feyenoord in their opening game of the competition, but home wins over Zorya and Fenerbahce looked to have steadied the ship, only to go and lose 2-1 to the latter at the start of November.

That 2-0 victory in Zorya on Thursday not only sees them through, but gets the monkey off their back, and they’ll be confident of taking any side on in the last 32, both home and away.

HOT – Goals galore

Although they haven’t netted as many as some sides in the competition, Mourinho must be thrilled that his team look deadly in front of goal.

Their tally of 12 goals was only bettered by five other teams, but it’s a reminder that, even though United haven’t been netting frequently in the Premier League, the quality is there, it’s just a case of transferring it into their league form.

A 4-1 win over Fenerbahce and then a 4-0 hammering of Feyenoord will give United fans huge confidence going into the knockout stages and, coupled with conceding just four times, they’ll be a tough side to beat in the next round.

NOT – Didn’t win the group

The main frustration for Mourinho and his side was that they didn’t do enough to top the group.

It means that United will be unseeded in Monday’s draw, and could face any of the 12 group winners, including Schalke, Roma, and Shakhtar Donestk, as well as the four best third place sides from the Champions League.

However, one they can’t meet are Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs, who they face at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday, but there are still enough talented sides in the draw who could cause United issues in the last 32.
