What’s Hot and What’s Not from the Boxing Day action in the Premier League

Chelsea made it 12 wins out of 12 in the Premier League by comfortably dispatching Bournemouth 3-0 on a busy afternoon of action on Boxing Day.

The Blues were one of 16 top-flight teams to take to the field yesterday, but it is they who lead the rest by some distance thanks to goals from Pedro and Eden Hazard, as well as an own goal from Cherries defender Steve Cook.

They are now seven points clear of second place Manchester City, who leapt above Liverpool courtesy of a 3-0 victory over bottom side Hull, who have now won just one of their last 16 top-flight matches.

Arsenal remain fourth after beating West Brom 1-0 at the Emirates, with Olivier Giroud’s late goal enough to see off Tony Pulis’ men, while Manchester United kept the pressure on the top five thanks to a 3-1 success over struggling Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Slaven Bilic’s West Ham piled further misery on Swansea boss Bob Bradley thanks to a 4-1 win at the Liberty Stadium, while Sam Allardyce’s first game in charge of Crystal Palace ended in a 1-1 draw at Watford.

Burnley picked up a sixth home league win of the season by beating Middlesbrough 1-0 at Turf Moor, while champions Leicester have dropped to 16th after losing to Everton at the King Power Stadium.

In what was a fascinating afternoon of action in the Premier League, here is What’s Hot and What’s Not from yesterday’s games…

HOT – Pedro and Chelsea

Chelsea made it 12 Premier League wins in a row by beating Bournemouth 3-0 at Stamford Bridge and, in Diego Costa’s absence, it was Pedro who lit up West London.

The Spanish international netted the opener after good work from Cesc Fabregas, before his effort late on instigated the own goal from Cherries defender Steve Cook.

In what was another excellent all round display from Conte’s men, the suspensions of Costa and N’Golo Kante proved to be of little issue to the Blues, with the front three of Eden Hazard, Pedro, and Willian linking up well and causing several problems to the Bournemouth defence, while Fabregas seamlessly slotted in alongside Nemanja Matic.

Chelsea are going to take some stopping.

NOT – Bob Bradley

It’s not looking good for Swansea and their manager Bob Bradley.

The Swans were thumped 4-1 at home by West Ham on Boxing Day, which was a seventh defeat in 11 games for the American boss since he replaced Francesco Guidolin at the start of October.

His team were comprehensively outplayed by the Hammers, and their third successive defeat means that they are now four points adrift of safety.

Their tally of 41 goals against is the most of any in the Premier League, and it remains to be seen whether Bradley gets time to turn it around at the Liberty Stadium.

A home game against Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve could be make or break for the 58-year-old.

HOT – Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Zlatan Ibrahimovic inspired Manchester United to a fourth consecutive league win by beating Sunderland 3-1 at Old Trafford, inflicting a miserable return on former United boss David Moyes.

The Swedish forward Ibrahimovic assisted the first, netted the second, and crossed in for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to expertly guide home the third in a fine performance from Jose Mourinho’s men, but it was Ibrahimovic who once again deserved the plaudits.

The 35-year-old has scored 11 goals in his last ten United matches, and will be crucial to their push for a top four place between now and May.

NOT – Hull

Bottom of the table at Christmas invariably means just one thing, and that is something that Hull fans will be well aware of going into the second half of the season.

And they didn’t get any Boxing Day cheer either.

Mike Phelan’s side suffered their 12th defeat of the campaign by losing 3-0 at home to Manchester City yesterday and, although it was always going to be a tough ask against Pep Guardiola’s men, Hull need to start picking up points in every game, especially at home.

The Tigers have now won just one of their last 16 Premier League games and, given that they are already four points adrift of safety and with the worst goal difference in the league, it points to nothing more than a serious struggle between now and May.
