What’s Hot and What’s Not from the EFL

Newcastle United returned to the top of the Championship after Aleksander Mitrovic netted the only goal as Rafael Benitez’s Magpies won away against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux in Saturday’s late game.

The Tyneside outfit are a point above Brighton and Hove Albion, who dispatched Burton Albion 4-1 on the south coast. Tomer Hemed’s brace, along with efforts from Sam Baldock and Glenn Murray, confirmed maximum points at the Amex Stadium.

Huddersfield Town, who are third in the second-tier, recorded a fifth straight victory after Izzy Brown and Nahki Wells earned the Terriers a 2-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers in the capital.

In League One, leaders Sheffield United left it late to beat Peterborough United on their travels at London Road, as Billy Sharp’s scored the only goal after 87 minutes, which claimed all three points for the Blades, who are now five clear of Scunthorpe United at the summit.

Graham Alexander’s Iron had their 26-game unbeaten home record brought to an end following a solitary goal from Shrewsbury Town’s Freddie Ladapo.

Bolton Wanderers narrowed the gap on the two teams above them in style. The Trotters came from behind to emphatically beat Walsall 4-1 at the Macron Stadium, courtesy of Gary Madine, James O’Conner’s own goal, Liam Trotter and Chris Long.

Meanwhile, in League Two, table-toppers Doncaster Rovers were held to a goalless stalemate against rock-bottom Newport County at Rodney Parade.

At Home Park, second-placed Plymouth Argyle were triumphant in the Devon derby, downing Exeter City. Matty Kennedy, Ryan Taylor and Jake Jervis were on target for the Pilgrims.

Brunton Park was the scene of one of the surprise results in the fourth-tier, when Carlisle United, who occupy the final automatic promotion place, suffered a 4-1 defeat to mid-table Blackpool.

So; after another enthralling weekend of action, here is What’s Hot and What’s Not from the EFL…

Championship Hot: Norwich City

Norwich City moved to within two points of the play-offs by thumping Nottingham Forest 5-1 at Carrow Road on Saturday.

Goals in the opening 18 minutes from Jonny Howson (Pictured), Josh Murphy and Wes Hoolahan were followed by Alex Pritchard’s brace in the second-half to make it six games without defeat for Alex Neil’s Canaries.

The Norfolk club will be hoping to continue their current up-turn in fortunes, having previously endured an indifferent campaign upon their return to the Championship, but after a run of results that has seen them climb up to seventh in the standings.

Championship Not: Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest’s issues continue to persist, and after their thrashing at the hands of Norwich City, the East Midlanders are 17th in the second-tier, seven points clear of the relegation places.

The defeat in East Anglia leaves them looking nervously over their shoulders, ahead of Tuesday night’s trip to face play-off chasing Fulham at Craven Cottage.

It has been a difficult campaign for Forest, both on and off the pitch.

Fawaz Al Hasawi remains the owner after a failed takeover attempt by an American consortium, while Gary Brazil (Inset) will see out the season as interim manager, following Philippe Montanier’s sacking last month.

League One Hot: Bolton Wanderers

Bolton Wanderers put financial uncertainty to one side as they put four past Walsall at the Macron Stadium, to move within four points of the automatic promotion places.

Phil Parkinson’s Trotters ended six games without a win by defeating the Saddlers.

Erhun Oztumer’s 40-yard pile-driver gave the visitors an early advantage, however, Wanderers recovered by scoring three before the break through Gary Madine, James O’Conner turning into his own net, and Liam Trotter, before Chris Long added a fourth late in the second-half.

After a testing week, Bolton are back to winning ways, and they host Rochdale on Tuesday.

League One Not: Coventry City

Sky Blues boss Slade.

Coventry City’s turbulent season seems to get worse with every passing week.

City were edged out by fellow strugglers Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park, which was there fifth loss on the spin.

Russell Slade’s men have lost nine out of their last ten games in the league, prop up the division, and are 10 points adrift of safety.

Coventry have been blighted by off-field issues throughout this term so far, with supporters protesting against Sisu, the current owners of the stricken Sky Blues.

Relegation to the fourth-tier looks increasingly inevitable for a club who graced the top-flight 16 years ago.

League Two Hot: Crewe Alexandra

Man of the Match: Cooper

Crewe Alexandra scored five without reply, dismantling Grimsby Town at Gresty Road to claim their first win in 12 outings in League Two.

The Railwaymen were four to the good after half an hour, through two goals each from George Cooper (Pictured) and Chris Dagnall.

Callum Cooke, making his debut for the Alex, wrapped up a vital win to ease the relegation fears of the Cheshire club.

For manager David Artell, it was his first victory since taking over from Steve Davis, who was sacked in January.

Crewe are up to 18th position in the table, six points away from the bottom two.

League Two Not: Grimsby Town

Grimsby defender Shaun Pearson

Grimsby Town manager Marcus Bignot apologised to the enraged Mariners support in the wake of the 5-0 drubbing that the Lincolnshire outfit succumbed to at Crewe.

Bignot’s beleaguered set of players endured a torrid afternoon in the North West, and had shipped four goals before the half-hour mark.

Now winless in three successive games; Grimsby are 13th in League Two, and have had to deal with the departure of top scorer Omar Bogle, who left Blundell Park in favour of a move to the Championship with Wigan Athletic on transfer deadline day.
