Championship table-toppers Newcastle United had their charge to the Premier League halted after Fulham shocked St James’ Park, coming away with a 3-1 win on Saturday.

Tom Cairney opened the scoring for Fulham after 15 minutes, a strike which was followed by Ryan Sessegnon’s brace early in the second-half for Slavisa Jokanovic’s West Londoners, who are now seventh in the Championship, two points off the final play-off place.

The defeat for Rafael Benitez’s Magpies means they are level on points with second-placed Brighton and Hove Albion, that is after the Seagulls downed Derby County at the AMEX Stadium in Friday night’s televised game, courtesy of goals from Anthony Knockaert, Sam Baldock and Glenn Murray.

Rajiv van La Parra ensured Huddersfield Town kept up ground on the top two at Griffin Park. David Wagner’s Terriers battled to a 1-0 win over Brentford in the capital.

In League One, with leaders Sheffield United not in action on Saturday, the focus turned to Highbury Stadium, as Fleetwood Town welcomed Bolton Wanderers in a fixture between second and fourth in the division.

It would be Phil Parkinson’s Wanderers who emphatically came out on top, defeating Uwe Rosler’s Cod Army 4-2 to end Fleetwood’s 18-match unbeaten run. A brace from Adam Le Fondre, alongside efforts from David Wheater and Mark Beevers, sent Bolton on their way to three points.

Meanwhile, Doncaster Rovers maintained their lead at the summit of League Two with a 2-0 win over Cheltenham Town at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Andy Butler and John Marquis were on the scoresheet for Rovers, who are four points clear at the top.

Plymouth Argyle consolidated second spot in the fourth-tier, as goals from Sonny Bradley and Graham Carey in the second-half confirmed maximum points for the Pilgrims at Mansfield Town.

Portsmouth’s automatic promotion hopes were boosted with a 4-0 triumph at Colchester United.

Eoin Doyle, Kyle Bennett, Danny Rose and Michael Doyle all found the net for third-placed Pompey.

So, after another enthralling weekend of action, here is Shoot!‘s What’s Hot and What’s Not from the EFL…

Championship Hot: Fulham

Fulham remained in touching distance of the final play-off place after impressively dispatching Newcastle United in front of a stunned St James’ Park crowd.

Having endured two struggling seasons ever since relegation back to the Championship, manager Slavisia Jokanovic has transformed the Cottagers into a well organised, attacking outfit.

Tom Cairney, alongside Ryan Sessegnon’s (Above) impressive brace rounded off a superb triumph on Tyneside, which really signalled their intentions of crashing into the top six, with the West Londoners currently seventh, two points off those prized places.

Tony Mowbray’s resurgent Blackburn Rovers visit Craven Cottage on Tuesday. Should Fulham prevail, they could move inside the top six.

Championship Not: Rotherham United

With nine games of the campaign left to play, Rotherham United prop up the table, 21 points adrift of safety, after Andreas Weimann settled a 1-0 defeat in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ favour at Molineux.

It has been another turbulent term for the Millers, who have lost 28 of their 37 league games.

The South Yorkshire side are onto their third manager of the campaign, in the form of interim boss Paul Warne (Pictured), following the departures of firstly Alan Stubbs in October, and then Kenny Jackett in November.

Their three-season stay in the Championship will soon come to a sour end, with a return to League One all but confirmed.

League One Hot: Bolton Wanderers

Bolton Wanderers ended a four-game winless run in style by putting four past Uwe Rosler’s in-form Fleetwood Town at Highbury.

Phil Parkinson’s Trotters moved up to third after beating the Cod Army on the Fylde Coast, in an efficient display which reignited their automatic promotion ambitions.

Adam Le Fondre opened the scoring after 17 minutes when his cross from the right looped over goalkeeper Alex Cairns, before David Wheater (Above) added a second shortly after, prodding home from Filipe Morais’ free-kick.

Town were back in it through Kyle Dempsey, but Mark Beevers scored a third after the break.

Morais added his third assist for Le Fondre to complete his brace with a header, prior to Bobby Grant pulling one back late on.

League One Not: Scunthorpe United

Scunthorpe boss Graham Alexander.

Scunthorpe United hopes of finishing in the top two were dealt another blow. Graham Alexander’s men suffered a 3-2 defeat to Gillingham at Priestfield.

The Lincolnshire outfit have subsequently dropped down to fifth in the third-tier, having not won for nine outings, which include four defeats on the spin.

On Saturday, it was a tale of three penalties that turned the fixture in Kent on its head.

With Scunthorpe two up through Paddy Madden and Harry Toffolo, Josh Wright netted a hat-trick of spot-kicks in the final 13 minutes for the Gills to inflict even more misery on the Iron, who somehow returned to Glanford Park empty handed.

League Two Hot: Portsmouth

Pompey manager Paul Cook.

Will this finally be the year that Portsmouth escape the basement division of English professional football?

The Hampshire side have spent four seasons in the fourth-tier, however they could be in for a return to League One after scoring four away at Colchester United.

Paul Cook’s Pompey occupy third position in the division, the final automatic promotion spot following goals from Eoin Doyle, Kyle Bennett, Danny Rose and Michael Doyle, to complete the resounding victory in Essex.

The Fratton Park club lost out in the play-off semi-finals to Plymouth Argyle last season, so they will be hoping to go one better and climb out of the division.

League Two Not: Leyton Orient

Orient defender Tom Parkes.

Issues have plagued Leyton Orient throughout the course of this season, both on and off the pitch.

The O’s current manager is Daniel Webb, who is the latest man at the helm in the Brisbane Road dugout. He is the fourth manager the East London club have had this term.

A winding-up order was also brought against the troubled team from the capital.

Orient are six points from safety in League Two after Saturday’s 3-0 loss on home soil against Grimsby Town, as a drop into the conference seems more likely by the week.
