What’s hot and what’s not from the EFL Cup

The first legs of the EFL Cup semi finals are out of the way, with both Manchester United and Southampton taking the advantage into the second legs against Hull and Liverpool respectively.

Jose Mourinho’s side got the action underway at Old Trafford on Tuesday night with Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini scoring to make sure that the Red Devils are firmly in control for their trip to the KCOM later this month.

On Wednesday night, an out of form Southampton side put their run behind them and turned in a impressive performance to take a 1-0 win to Anfield.

Claude Puel’s side could have easily had a bigger advantage going into the second leg, with the Loris Karius and the crossbar denying Nathan Redmond what could have been a famous hat-trick.

Hull, under new manager Marco Silva, have a lot to do when Mourinho pays a visit at the end of January, whilst Liverpool will need to start fast and catch the visitors out if they are to book a spot at Wembley.

With the first legs done and dusted, what is hot and what’s not? Take a look…

HOT: Juan Mata

The Spanish playmaker got on the score sheet against the Tigers.

Despite his goal being a tap-in, the former Chelsea man showed his worth throughout and was creative and threatening on the ball until he was taken off to a standing ovation in the second half.

NOT: Daniel Sturridge

Liverpool dominated in terms of possession at St. Mary’s on Wednesday night, but could do nothing with it.

There was a distinct lack of creativity from the visitor’s mainly due to England international, Daniel Sturridge.

The former Manchester City man offered little in terms of movement and was controlled by Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk throughout.

HOT: Saints’ setup

Despite the lack of spark from Jurgen Klopp’s side, Claude Puel had his side setup perfectly on the south coast.

After a terrible run of form, the Frenchman knew what he needed from his men and they delivered with a thoroughly professional showing.

Whist there was a nervy start from the hosts, the frustrated Liverpool throughout and restricted them to just sitting in the middle third for long periods.

NOT: Neil Swarbrick

This may seem a little harsh as there were no decisions which cost either side a goal at St. Mary’s on Wednesday night, but the referee was poor throughout.

Whilst the 51-year-old didn’t go full Mike Dean, there were plenty of contentious decisions which often stalled what otherwise was an enjoyable game.
