What’s Hot and What’s Not from the FA Cup fourth round weekend

Non-league duo Lincoln City and Sutton United made history over the weekend as both caused big FA Cup upsets to reach the fifth round.

There have never been two non-league sides in round five, yet Darren Cowley’s Lincoln made it a genuine possibility by coming from behind to defeat Championship leaders Brightn 3-1 at Sincil Bank, with Richie Towell’s first-half strike cancelled out by goals from Alan Power and Theo Robinson, as well as an own goal from Fikayo Tomori, in the second period.

And then Paul Doswell’s Sutton made it a double non-league success by overcoming high-flying Leeds United 1-0 at Gander Green Lane on Sunday, with Jamie Collins’ penalty eight minutes into the second-half securing a last 16 berth for the National League side.

It wasn’t just the two non-league outfits that caused upsets though, as League One side Oxford United stunned Championship promotion contenders Newcastle United 3-0, while Wolves inflicted a third defeat in a week on Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool after winning 2-1 at Anfield on Saturday.

There were also victories for Millwall and Fulham, who dispatched Watford and Hull respectively, while Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham needed a last-minute Son Heung-min goal to get past League Two high-flyers Wycombe Wanderers 4-3 at White Hart Lane.

In what was an exciting weekend of cup football around the country, here is What’s Hot and What’s Not from the fourth round weekend of the FA Cup…

HOT – Lincoln City

Lincoln City produced yet another sensational performance to knock out Championship opposition for the second successive round.

Darren Cowley’s men overcame Ipswich in round three, and then fell a goal behind to second tier leaders Brighton at Sincil Bank as it looked like their cup dream could be coming to an end.

However, a stunning second half display for the Imps saw them score three unanswered goals to knock the Seagulls out of the competition, and reach the fifth round for the first time since 1887.

Lincoln’s effort and desire in the second half epitomised what the FA Cup is all about, and they’ll be hoping for a glamour tie in Monday’s fifth round draw.

NOT – Liverpool

Liverpool saw their Premier League title chances take a hit by losing at home to Swansea last weekend, before being knocked out of the League Cup by Southampton in midweek.

So to lose 2-1 at home to Wolves on Saturday in the FA Cup may well have ended their chances of silverware this term.

First half goals from Richard Stearman and Andreas Weimann proved to be enough to get past Jurgen Klopp’s side and, although Divock Origi got a goal back late on, the Reds’ second string side were unable to force a replay.

It has been a disastrous week for Liverpool, who know that they quite simply have to beat Premier League leaders Chelsea on Tuesday night to keep their slim title chances alive.

However, with how well they’ve done in 2017 thus far, winning just one of seven games, it’s going to be a tough ask for Klopp’s men against the Blues.

HOT – Sutton United

Sutton United made it two non-league teams in the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time ever by overcoming 1972 winners Leeds United 1-0 on Sunday.

Paul Doswell’s men were outstanding throughout and deservedly reached the last 16, with Jamie Collins’ penalty eight minutes into the second half enough to see off Garry Monk’s under-whelming side at Gander Green Lane.

Their only previous meeting came back in 1970, when Don Revie’s Leeds thumped Sutton 6-0 at the same stage of the competition – now it’s time for Sutton to celebrate a momentous win, and one that puts them just 180 minutes away from Wembley.

NOT – Those that made wholesale changes

Several Premier League and Championship sides that changed the vast majority of their starting eleven paid the price with an FA Cup exit over the weekend.

Claude Puel made ten changes to his Southampton team that lost 5-0 against Arsenal, with Arsene Wenger himself changing ten of his starting line-up, while the likes of Liverpool (nine), Watford (seven), Crystal Palace (six), and Hull (six) all made wholesale changes, and then went out of the cup.

Championship high-flyers Newcastle, Brighton, and Leeds also rotated their sides, with the latter making ten changes to the others’ nine, with clearly the chance of promotion to the Premier League a greater incentive than potential FA Cup glory.

Nonetheless, it clearly shows where the world’s oldest club competition ranks in terms of priority, and you sense that the FA Cup needs a shake-up of some sort to re-establish its glamour and prestige amongst many clubs around the country.
