What’s Hot and What’s Not from the FA Cup third round weekend

Six Premier League teams exited the FA Cup while two Non-league sides remain in the competition after a thrilling weekend of third round action in the world’s oldest club competition.

Ronald Koeman’s Everton were the highest ranked side knocked out of the competition after losing 2-1 at home to Premier League champions Leicester, while West Brom, currently eighth in the top-flight, fell by the same scoreline at home to Championship side Derby.

Ninth place Bournemouth were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by League One outfit Millwall, with Eddie Howe’s 11 changes seriously backfiring, while Stoke, West Ham, and Swansea also exited at the third round stage, losing to Wolves, Manchester City, and Hull respectively.

There will be non-league representation in the fourth round draw this evening in the form of Lincoln City, who drew 2-2 at Ipswich on Saturday, and Sutton United, who held AFC Wimbledon to a goalless draw at the Borough Sports Ground.

Fourth tier Plymouth Argyle produced a fantastic display to hold Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield, while Arsenal left it late to see off Preston 2-1 at Deepdale.

Holders Manchester United breezed through courtesy of a 4-0 victory over Reading, with the day belonging to Wayne Rooney, while there were also comfortable wins for fellow Premier League sides Chelsea, Tottenham, Hull, Watford, and Middlesbrough.

In what was an exciting weekend of action, here is What’s Hot and What’s Not from the third round of this season’s FA Cup…

HOT – Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney drew level with Sir Bobby Charlton as Manchester United’s record goal-scorer by netting his 249th goal for the Red Devils in their 4-0 victory over Reading on Saturday.

The England captain has been edging closer to Charlton’s 43-year record over the course of the season, and he drew level with the United legend just seven minutes into their FA Cup clash with the Royals when he finished from Juan Mata’s cross.

Rooney is England’s record goal-scorer, and now looks set to break the United record in the coming weeks, perhaps against Liverpool at Old Trafford next weekend?

A sensational achievement from a sensational footballer.

NOT – Everton

Ronald Koeman named a strong side for Everton’s FA Cup clash against Premier League champions Leicester on Saturday, yet the Toffees were knocked out by Claudio Ranieri’s men after losing 2-1 at Goodison Park.

Romelu Lukaku, Seamus Coleman, Ross Barkley, and Ashley Williams all started for Everton as the hosts looked to begin their quest for a first major trophy since 1995, but Lukaku’s strike was cancelled out by two Ahmed Musa goals in the second half.

With the Toffees unlikely to break into a European spot in the Premier League, they are currently nine points behind sixth place Manchester United, this represented a real chance for Koeman’s side to go deep into the competition, especially having reached the semi-finals last season.

However, it wasn’t to be, and they’ll be hugely disappointed to exit the FA Cup so early.

HOT – Plymouth

Honorary mentions must go to Lincoln City, who drew 2-2 at Ipswich, and Sutton United, who forced a replay with AFC Wimbledon, yet it’s difficult to argue that the result of the weekend belonged to Plymouth Argyle.

The League Two promotion chasers produced a resilient performance to draw 0-0 at Premier League giants Liverpool on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp made ten changes to his side that drew 2-2 at Sunderland last week, with only Emre Can retaining his place, yet his young team – the youngest in the club’s history – couldn’t find a way past Derek Adams’ side, who deservedly held on to earn a replay.

The Pilgrims deserve enormous credit for going to Merseyside and not being overawed by the occasion, and they’ll certainly fancy their chances of an upset when they host the Reds at Home Park in eight days’ time.

NOT – Stoke

Saturday saw a full strength Stoke team come up against a side that hadn’t won an FA Cup game since 2011, as Mark Hughes’ Potters entertained Championship outfit Wolves at the bet365 Stadium.

Yet Hughes’ team, which included the likes of Bojan, Xherdan Shaqiri, and Marko Arnautovic, lost 2-0 at home to Paul Lambert’s men, with goals from Helder Costa and Matt Doherty booking their place in the last 32.

Like Everton, Stoke were clearly targeting a cup run given the strength of side Hughes put out, but they laboured throughout and were deservedly beaten.

Like Everton, Stoke are very unlikely to go down and equally as unlikely to finish in the top six, so a cup run should have been a big priority in the second half of the season, especially given that they have never won the FA Cup.

Like Everton though, Stoke have fallen at the first hurdle.
