What’s Hot and What’s Not from the midweek action in the Premier League

Premier League leaders Chelsea reasserted their authority on the title race courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Wednesday.

Antonio Conte’s men suffered a shock defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday to see their lead at the top cut to seven points, but an Eden Hazard brace either side of a Sergio Aguero strike saw the Blues get back to winning ways at Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham kept the pressure on the West London outfit though by netting three times in the last five minutes to see off Swansea, who had looked on course for a massive win when Wayne Routledge gave them a first half lead only to lose 3-1 to Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

Liverpool remain third despite drawing 2-2 at home to Bournemouth, with Josh King netting a late equaliser for Eddie Howe’s men to once again frustrate the Reds against lower league opposition, while Arsenal moved up to fifth after dispatching West Ham 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

Manchester United’s home issues continued on Tuesday when they could only muster a 1-1 draw with Everton, while eighth place West Brom have now won just one of their last five league matches after losing 2-0 at Watford, who moved into the top half as a result.

At the bottom, things aren’t looking good for David Moyes’ Sunderland after they lost 2-0 at resurgent Leicester, while North East rivals Middlesbrough are also staring relegation in the face after they were beaten 4-2 by Hull on Wednesday, a result which moved the Tigers out of the bottom three.

Sam Allardyce’s Crystal Palace couldn’t back up their stunning win at Chelsea with victory at Southampton, instead going down 3-1 to Claude Puel’s side, while Burnley recorded yet another home win thanks to a 1-0 success over Stoke City.

So, in what was a frantic few days of football in the top-flight, here is What’s Hot and What’s Not from the midweek Premier League action…

HOT – Eden Hazard

Eden Hazard’s brace inspired Chelsea to a 2-1 victory over Manchester City, and proved that their defeat against Crystal Palace last weekend with nothing more than a mere blip.

The Belgian international struck the opener after just ten minutes, and although Sergio Aguero equalised for the visitors, it was Hazard who had the final say by rebounding home his own penalty miss ten minutes before half time.

It was yet another impressive display from the 26-year-old, who looks set to once again by their main man between now and May in their quest to regain the Premier League title.

NOT – Manchester United

It’s just not quite clicking for Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United at present, with the Red Devils again having to settle for a share of the spoils at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Mourinho’s men needed a last-gasp Zlatan Ibrahimovic penalty to secure a 1-1 draw against Everton, which in turn was their ninth home league draw of the campaign, and 12th overall this term.

It means that from their two home games in four days, United picked up just two points, and have thus seen their top four hopes severely dented as a result.

Finding that killer instinct and overall clinical edge in the final third is their chief objective between now and May, otherwise more draws and more irritating afternoons are to follow for Mourinho and his side.

HOT – Leicester City

Claudio Ranieri’s sacking at champions Leicester back in February was met with disbelief and anger all over the footballing world.

Yet there’s little doubt now that it was the right decision from the Foxes hierarchy, as new boss Craig Shakespeare has led the side to five straight Premier League victories since taking charge.

The Foxes comfortably saw off bottom of the table Sunderland 2-0 on Tuesday night to move up to 11th in the table, and eight points clear of danger.

Given that they looked a shoe-in for relegation six weeks ago, Shakespeare has done a remarkable job in turning things around at the King Power Stadium, and with a Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid to come, things are certainly a lot brighter at the Midlands club.

NOT – Slaven Bilic’s West Ham

West Ham were ninth in the Premier League and 11 points clear of danger when they beat Southampton 3-1 on February 4.

Fast forward two months, and Slaven Bilic’s men are in a relegation battle following a run of five successive league defeats, and just two points from a possible 21.

The Hammers meekly went down 3-0 at Arsenal on Wednesday night to plunge them closer to the drop – they are now 15th and just five points clear of the bottom three – and they don’t look like they are going to get out of their current rut any time soon.

Their next two games are against sides in the bottom three (Swansea and Sunderland), and you sense if they don’t get at least one win from those encounters, Bilic’s men will be in serious trouble.
