What’s Hot and What’s Not from this weekend in the Premier League

Premier League leaders Chelsea got back to winning ways on Saturday courtesy of a 3-0 victory over champions Leicester at the King Power Stadium.

The Blues, without star striker Diego Costa following a reported bust-up with manager Antonio Conte, breezed past Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes, with a brace from Marcos Alonso and a strike from Pedro securing a 17th league win of the campaign for Conte’s men.

They now have Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham behind them in the table after Spurs produced an excellent display to dispatch West Brom 4-0 at White Hart Lane, with Harry Kane, who became a father in the week, firing home a hat-trick for the North London side.

They are up to second at the expense of Liverpool, who could only manage a 1-1 draw at Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United on Sunday despite taking the lead through James Milner’s first half penalty. However, Zlatan Ibrahimovic headed home six minutes from time to secure a point for the hosts.

Arsenal move up to fourth after thumping struggling Swansea 4-0 at the Liberty Stadium, with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City slipping out of the Champions League places after they were beaten by the same score-line at Everton on Sunday.

Marco Silva won his first Premier League game in charge of Hull, as his side came from behind to beat Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth 3-1 at the KCOM Stadium. They are now up to 18th following Sunderland’s 3-1 home defeat by Stoke, and indeed level on points with Sam Allardyce’s Crystal Palace after the Eagles suffered a third successive league loss at the hands of West Ham.

Burnley moved into the top half of the division following a 1-0 success over Southampton at Turf Moor, their eighth home win of the campaign, while Watford drew 0-0 with Middlesbrough on an emotional day at Vicarage Road following the death of Graham Taylor in the week.

Following an exciting weekend of football, here’s What’s Hot and What’s Not from this weekend’s Premier League action…

HOT – Harry Kane and Tottenham

Tottenham were sensational in their 4-0 win over West Brom on Saturday, with star striker Harry Kane ending a great week on a personal level with a hat-trick in the rout.

The England international became a father in the week, and celebrated in style by becoming the fastest Spurs man to reach 60 Premier League goals for the club, beating Teddy Sheringham’s record of 107 games by eight matches.

Kane gave Pochettino’s men the lead by guiding home Christian Eriksen’s pass from the edge of the box, and he got his second and Spurs’ third 13 minutes from time with an excellent finish from a testing Kyle Walker cross.

His third came after a wonderful chipped pass from Dele Alli found the striker, who then fired past the helpless Ben Foster to net his 13th league goal of the campaign.

It’s been a fantastic week for Kane, and one he’s sure to remember for a very long time.

NOT – Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba has been improving in recent weeks, but had a nightmare against Liverpool on Sunday.

The Manchester United man had already been found wanting when defending set pieces before getting himself into a complete muddle attempting to clear James Milner’s cross, resulting in him blatantly handling the ball, and allowing Milner to give the visitors the lead from the spot.

It wasn’t just his defensive contribution which was poor, as the French international struggled to have any impact on the game, and was guilty of missing a decent chance prior to Liverpool taking the lead.

Pogba repeatedly lost possession and didn’t do enough to help Ander Herrera throughout the contest – when you spend £89 million on a hugely talented player, these are the sort of games you want him to step up and make the difference.

Yet Pogba didn’t on this occasion.

HOT – Andy Carroll and West Ham

It has been a tricky week for West Ham after manager Slaven Bilic confirmed in his pre-match press conference that star man Dimitri Payet had refused to play for the club.

However, they put that to one side and produced arguably their best home performance of the season to comfortably beat Crystal Palace 3-0, and consign former boss Sam Allardyce to an unhappy return to East London.

The star man for the Hammers was striker Andy Carroll, who had an excellent game anyway until unleashing a moment of brilliance to seal the victory for the hosts.

The England striker met Michail Antonio’s cross in mid-air with an unbelievable left-footed scissor-kick which sailed past the despairing Wayne Hennessey, who of course was the keeper beaten by Olivier Giroud’s magical scorpion kick at the Emirates Stadium a few weeks ago.

Carroll’s return from injury over the past few weeks has given everyone at the London Stadium a boost and, when the club really needed someone to give them a lift after a testing few days, Carroll did just that.

NOT – Pep Guardiola

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola suffered his heaviest league defeat as a manager on Sunday when his side went down 4-0 to Everton at Goodison Park.

The Citizens missed opportunities in the first half and were deservedly punished for some hopeless defending by a rampant Everton, who have all but ended City’s faint hopes of winning the title this season.

Just when it looked like City were beginning to rediscover some form, they produce a limp defensive display and a bluntness going forward, which is only going to increase the pressure on Guardiola.

They are now ten points behind leaders Chelsea and two points adrift of fourth place Arsenal and, with neighbours Manchester United on a good run and just two points behind them, City are now battling for a top four place as opposed to the Premier League title.
