What’s Hot and What’s Not from this weekend in the Premier League

Leaders Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley on Sunday, but the Blues still extended their lead at the summit of the Premier League.

Antonio Conte’s side went into their clash at Turf Moor knowing that Tottenham had lost at Liverpool, so victory would have taken them 12 points clear at the top.

And they looked to be on course to doing so when Pedro gave them a seventh minute lead, although Robbie Brady’s brilliant free-kick deservedly secured a point for Sean Dyche’s men, who moved up to 12th as a result.

As aforementioned, second place Spurs lost 2-0 at Anfield, which saw Liverpool move back into the top four, while Arsenal regained third after a controversial 2-0 success at home to Hull on Saturday.

Manchester United kept pace with the top four thanks to a 2-0 victory over Watford at Old Trafford, with Anthony Martial impressing, while fifth place Manchester City have the chance to go second in the table tonight with victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

Everton remained seventh following a 0-0 draw with relegation-threatened Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium, while Tony Pulis’ West Brom strengthened their grip on eighth with an entertaining 2-2 draw at West Ham.

At the bottom, all three sides in the relegation zone lost, with Hull losing at Arsenal, Crystal Palace narrowly going down 1-0 at Stoke, and Sunderland suffering a 4-0 thumping at home to Southampton.

However, Paul Clement’s Swansea moved themselves away from danger by beating Leicester 2-0 on Sunday, a result which plunges Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes into the mire after a fifth successive league defeat.

So, on what was a fascinating weekend of Premier League action, here is What’s Hot and What’s Not from the past few days in England’s top-flight…

HOT – Sadio Mane and Liverpool

Liverpool were in serious need of a victory to keep pace with the sides in the top four, and got a very good one over Tottenham on Saturday courtesy of a brace from Sadio Mane.

And the Senegalese international’s reminded many of how much the Reds missed him while he was away on international duty.

It was the 24-year-old’s excellent movement in behind the Spurs defence which saw him pick up Georginio Wijnaldum’s sensational through-ball for the opener, before being on hand to slot home the rebound from Roberto Firmino’s effort for the second, having started the move earlier on.

Mane was superb throughout the contest, constantly causing Ben Davies issues down the left through his pace and energy, which was exactly what Liverpool were missing throughout January.

Having him back will feel like a new signing, and it’s one that could reignite their top four charge over the coming weeks.

NOT – The champions Leicester

What has happened to Leicester City?

The champions have struggled for much of the campaign, but since the turn of the year, their problems have magnified after a run of five straight defeats leaves them just a point and a place above the bottom three.

Their limp display in the 2-0 defeat at Swansea on Sunday was demonstrative of a side low on confidence, running out of ideas, and looking almost certain to go down come May.

Manager Claudio Ranieri needs to find something fast, as one of the biggest stories ever in sport could become even bigger for all the wrong reasons.

HOT – Sean Dyche and Burnley

Despite Burnley’s phenomenal home record, many still expected Premier League leaders Chelsea to go to Turf Moor and pick up all three points.

But Sean Dyche and his men got everything spot-on to secure a deserved point on Sunday afternoon.

The Clarets responded excellently to going behind to Pedro’s seventh minute goal, with Robbie Brady’s free-kick a moment of brilliance not even the in-form Thibaut Courtois could keep out.

It wasn’t just that though, Dyche’s side were tactically outstanding in everything they did.

They didn’t give the Blues much time on the ball to do their stuff, with the likes of Eden Hazard and Diego Costa not hugely involved, and they got forward quickly and efficiently to disrupt Chelsea’s organisation.

If Andre Gray had fired home a great chance late on, it could have been a memorable victory for Dyche’s men, but that shouldn’t detract from a wonderful team performance from Dyche’s men.

NOT – Sunderland

After beating Crystal Palace 4-0 last time out, Sunderland fans would have been confident of getting something from their home match with out-of-form Southampton on Saturday.

But it didn’t quite go to plan for David Moyes’ men, who suffered a 4-0 thumping against Claude Puel’s side to keep them bottom of the Premier League.

Two goals from new signing Manolo Gabbiadini, as well as a strike from Shane Long and an own goal from Jason Denayer, capped off a miserable afternoon on Wearside for the Black Cats, who were second-best as soon as the Saints got their opener after 30 minutes.

Their only saving grace was that several sides around them lost as well, but only wins will keep Sunderland up now, and a home game against a struggling side was a great opportunity to get one.
