Where are they now? England team that beat Bulgaria 3-0 in Euro 2012 qualifier

With the football world in the international break, England face Bulgaria on Saturday in a crucial qualifier for next year’s Euro 2020 tournament.

The Three Lions have got off to a fantastic start in Group A winning both their opening two games against Czech Republic and Montenegro, scoring 10 goals in the process.

As Bulgaria make their way to Wembley to face Gareth Southgate’s side, we look back to when the countries last met in an international game, way back in Sofia in 2011, again in a European Championship qualifier.

Here’s what the 11 starters, who won the match 3-0 under the management of Fabio Capello, are up to now.

GK: Joe Hart

By 2011, Joe Hart had already established himself as England’s No.1, taking over from Robert Green and David James following England’s failed 2010 World Cup campaign.

Unfortunately for Hart, the shot-stopper hasn’t managed to keep up the international form and is now behind young Englishman Nick Pope for Premier League side Burnley.

RB: Chris Smalling

Fabio Capello wasn’t afraid to select players out of position and this was certainly the case with Chris Smalling, who spent many games under the Italian playing right-back.

Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, Smalling has struggled to hold down a regular starting place at Old Trafford, and with the arrival of Harry Maguire, the defender has taken a good opportunity to go on loan to Serie A side AS Roma.

CB: Gary Cahill

Gary Cahill made his England debut in this clash with Bulgaria, getting on the scoresheet too! Back in 2011 he was playing for Bolton Wanderers and making a name for himself as a promising young centre-back.

Cahill went from strength-to-strength since his England debut, establishing himself as an England regular and winning many major trophies at Chelsea. He’s now currently playing his football at Crystal Palace, who he signed for in the summer.

CB: John Terry (c)

Chelsea legend John Terry was re-instated as England captain in 2011, following the long-term injury issues to fellow centre-back Rio Ferdinand.

Following a long and successful career for both club and country, albeit with some controversies along the way, Terry is now assistant manager at Aston Villa, who he helped guide to Premier League promotion last season.

LB: Ashley Cole

Widely regarded as the best left-back England has ever produced, the former Arsenal star made 107 appearances for his country and in 2011 was one of the first names on the team sheet.

Following his trophy-laden spell at Chelsea, Cole moved to AS Roma, LA Galaxy and finally Derby County before announcing his retirement last month.

RM: Theo Walcott

Theo Walcott’s England career will always be a case of ‘what could have been’ following his inclusion in the 2006 World Cup squad at just 16.

Having now not played for his country since 2016, Walcott is enjoying his football at Everton in the Premier League and seems to bave plenty years left in him.

CM: Scott Parker

Having not made Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad, Scott Parker was starting to pick up regular game time for England come the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Parker hung up his playing boots in 2017 and is now manager at Fulham in the Championship having taken over from Claudio Ranieri last term.

CM: Gareth Barry

More of a regular fixture during this period than his midfield team-mate Parker, Gareth Barry was a constant in Capello’s England teams.

Barry doesn’t seem to know what age is, still playing football at 38. The all-time Premier League appearance record holder was released by West Bromwich Albion last year, but reports suggest he could earn a new contract under new manager Slaven Bilic.

LM: Stewart Downing

Stewart Downing received his most regular international football under Fabio Capello, having spent many years coming in and out of the side.

The left winger is still playing football and has joined Championship side Blackburn Rovers following a four-year spell with Middlesbrough.

AM: Ashley Young

Back in 2011, Ashley Young was an exciting attacking midfielder who was enjoying a rich vein of form behind striker Wayne Rooney.

Central attacking roles are long behind Young who now regularly plays at left-back for Manchester United and is current club captain at Old Trafford.

Striker: Wayne Rooney

England’s greatest ever goalscorer Wayne Rooney scored twice in this game on his way to a record-breaking 53 for his country.

The striker came out of international retirement in 2018 for a game against the United States of America and is set to join Derby County as a player coach in January, ending his 18-month spell with D.C. United.
