Then: Young USA international Tim Howard was signed by United as a replacement for the outgoing Fabien Barthez. While he was relatively unknown, he had already made his debut for the senior national side and, in his debut against Arsenal in the Community Shield, was the hero as he saved the decisive penalty. His first half of the season carried on in a similar vein. However, in a Champions League tie against Porto, Howard’s mistake cost United their place in the competition and saw Jose Mourinho introduce himself to English fans with that famous run down the Old Trafford touchline.
Now: Howard is arguably one of Everton’s most consistent goalkeepers ever. Since signing from United in 2006, he has been an ever present for both club and country. During the 2014 World Cup, Howard’s performances for the USA re-established his reputation as one of the top stoppers in European football. During a tightly contested tie against Belgium in the last-16, the keeper broke the record for the number of stops in a World Cup game ever, with 15.
