Sunday’s EFL Cup final could see Manchester United pick up their first triumph in this competition since 2010.

Seven years ago, The Red Devils beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Wembley Stadium to lift the trophy, which at the time was known as the Carling Cup.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side went behind early in the game thanks to a James Milner penalty.

They equalised just minutes later, thanks to Michael Owen’s shot from just inside the penalty area.

Substitute Wayne Rooney got the winner for United with a superb looping header with just under 20 minutes remaining in the game.

Manchester United have lifted the trophy four times and a victory over Southampton on Sunday would make them only the fourth team ever to have won the competition five or more times.

In preparation for Sunday’s cup final, Shoot! looks at where the 2010 winning team are now…

GK: Tomasz Kuszczak

Polish goalkeeper Kuszczak spent six seasons at Old Trafford. He started his career there in 2006, on a season-long loan deal from West Brom, before signing permanently in July 2007.

Despite being their cup-winning goalkeeper, Kuszczak did not feature for United for the remainder of the 2009/10 season.

In fact, the Polishman only played 10 more times for the club, before being loaned out to Watford, and then eventually joining Brighton and Hove Albion on a free transfer in 2012.

Now aged 34, Kuszczak is currently first choice goalkeeper at Championship side Birmingham City.

Since arriving at St Andrews, Kuszczak has flourished in the first-team, making 67 appearances so far.

His last two years have perhaps salvaged a slightly topsy-turvy career.

RB: Rafael

The Brazilian full-back was chosen over club legend Gary Neville for the 2010 cup final.

Rafael spent seven years at Manchester United in a spell that saw him win nine major honours, including three Premier League titles.

His spell at Manchester saw him make 169 appearances, scoring five times in the process.

After falling out of favour shortly after Ferguson’s retirement, Rafael moved to Lyon in August 2015 for a fee of £2.5m.

Rafael is now a first-team regular for Les Gones and he has featured 25 times for them in all competitions this season.

RCB: Nemanja Vidic

The Serbian defender led from the back for many years whilst playing for The Red Devils.

Vidic gave away the penalty in the final against Aston Villa for a foul on Gabriel Agbonlahor, but United’s comeback meant that his first-half mistake did not cost them the trophy.

Vidic’s 2010 League Cup win was just one of the 15 major trophies that the Serbian lifted in his eight and a half years at Old Trafford.

After leaving The Red Devils in 2014, Vidic signed for Inter Milan, before retiring 18 months later.

In recent weeks, Vidic has decided to take up a career in coaching after being spotted on a recent coaching course with fellow United legend Nicky Butt.

LCB: Jonny Evans

Partnering the experienced Vidic was United academy graduate Jonny Evans.

In Evans’ nine years as a first-team player at Old Trafford, he made nearly 200 appearances and won 10 major trophies.

Evans departed United in August 2015, joining West Bromwich Albion for £6m.

Since arriving in the West Midlands, Evans has made 52 appearances that has seen him utilised in a new position at left-back in certain matches.

LB: Patrice Evra

Evra was the captain of United on the day of their cup triumph.

The Frenchman was forced to mark winger Ashley Young back in 2010, who is now coincidentally playing for The Red Devils.

Evra had a very successful career at Old Trafford, winning 15 major trophies in his eight and a half year spell at Manchester United.

After departing the club in July 2014, the French veteran joined Juventus for just £1.2m.

Evra departed Juventus last month, moving to back to France to play for Marseille.

RM: Antonio Valencia

Valencia is one of the two United players from the 2010 who are still playing for the club today.

Unlike most of the squad, Valencia is still part of the United starting eleven.

In the 2010 final, Valencia played as a right midfielder, where Valencia has played the majority of his career.

In recent seasons, the Ecuadorian has become the club’s first choice right-back, a position that he has settled into very quickly.

RCM: Michael Carrick

Carrick is the second current United player, who featured back in 2010.

The midfielder has been at The Red Devils since 2006, after signing from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of £18.6m.

In that time, Carrick has made 440 appearances for the club and has won 15 major trophies, including a Champions League winners medal.

Despite being 35-years-old, Carrick has proved regularly why he is still a major part of United’s first-team squad.

LCM: Darren Fletcher

Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher partnered Michael Carrick in the 2010 final.

Fletcher came through United’s youth academy and struggled with injuries as a youth player, he did not make his first-team debut until a Champions League game against FC Basel back in 2003.

The 33-year old stayed at Old Trafford until February 2015, making over 300 appearances and winning 12 major trophies in that time.

Since his departure two years ago, Fletcher has been playing for West Brom. He has been their captain ever since making his debut there, and he has made 84 appearances for the Baggies.

LM: Park Ji-Sung

The South Korean midfielder completed the midfield quartet against the Villans.

After being signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from PSV Eindhoven in 2005, Park spent seven years in Manchester.

In that time, he played 205 times for The Red Devils and won 13 major trophies.

After leaving for Queens Park Rangers in 2012, Park has played for both the R’s and enjoyed a second spell at PSV. He retired professionally in May 2014.

Since 2016, the 35-year old has been attending De Montfort University to study Sports Management, with an aim to eventually coach in the K-League in his native South Korea.

ST: Dimitar Berbatov

Bulgarian striker Berbatov was one half of the United striker partnership.

Berbatov joined The Red Devils in 2008 for a then record fee of around £30m.

In his four years with the club, the Bulgarian scored 56 times in 149 games. He also won six major trophies in that time.

After departing in 2012, Berbatov went on Fulham, Monaco and PAOK Salonika.

Since departing PAOK in June, Berbatov has struggled to find a club and he is currently a free agent.

ST: Michael Owen

The final name on that teamsheet is English talisman Michael Owen.

Owen scored the equaliser against Villa in the 2010 final with a well taken first-time finish from just inside the area.

The striker only played 41 minutes of the final, after being forced off with a hamstring injury. He was replaced by Wayne Rooney, who scored the eventual winner in the final.

Owen joined the Reds on a free transfer from Newcastle United at the start of the 2009-10 season, but injury problems restricted him of much first-team football at Old Trafford.

Despite playing 52 times for United, Owen only started 18 times, with the final being arguably his most important start for the side.

Owen spent three years at United and scored 17 times before departing for Stoke City in 2012.

After retiring in 2013, Owen is now a regular commentator for BT Sport.
