The footballing egg-heads here at Shoot! will take any opportunity they can to roll back the years in order to take a look at their heroes from a bygone era, and find out just what happened to them.

Whether that be an iconic XI, a squad of predicted future stars or simply a club icon. As the years go on, such entities are confined to the history books, but wouldn’t you love to know where they are now?

On Saturday one of the biggest derbies in world football will reignite as Celtic play hosts to their neighbours from across town and fierce rivals, Rangers.

The Old Firm clash resumes in earnest as Mark Warburton’s side return to the Scottish Premier League this season after a four year stint in the lower leagues.

The titans of Scottish football, who have over 100 league titles between them, have met during The Gers hiatus from top flight football, in the Cup, however the last time they met in the league was in April 2012 when The Hoops cruised to a 3-0 win over their rivals.

There has been much change at Ibrox since that fixture, as the blue half of Glasgow watched their side plummet to the fourth tier of Scottish football before four years in the wilderness.

But what happened to the side who were on the receiving end of that 3-0 defeat to Neil Lennon’s side? Well, take a look…

The Edinburgh born shot-stopper was one of those to complain when he saw his contract at Rangers carried over to the new company in the lower leagues and subsequently left Ibrox for Turkish side, Besiktas.

After a season in Turkey the ‘keeper, who spent 11 years at Rangers, joined Hull City in 2013 where he has made over 100 appearances before picking up a serious back injury over the summer.

After pledging his future to the club amidst the financial trouble the Romania international made a complete U-turn and decided he wanted to leave. After a loan spell with Italian outfit Spezia, the defender was released by Rangers in 2013.

The 35-year-old then joined Greek side Asteras Tripoli before becoming a free agent this year, and is reportedly now considering retirement.

The defender was one of a few players to stay on at Ibrox after the drop to the fourth tier. He stayed with the club until he joined Kilmarnock on a player/coach contract.

The 38-year-old has one Killie appearance under his belt, and took temporary charge of the side earlier this year for two games, the first of which was a 0-0 draw with his old side.

Lee Wallace

The full-back remains very much a key player under Mark Warburton having pledged to stay on under the new company in 2012.

The former Hearts man has 225 Gers appearances to his name, scoring on 22 occasions and setting up 51 goals along the way.

The full back showed no desire to stay put under the new company in the fourth tier, stating that he owed no loyalty to the new club.

Leaving as a free agent the Edinburgh born right back joined Norwich City, where he still plays in the Championship, having made three league appearances so far this season.

Carlos Bocanegra

The former Fulham man, like Goian, spent a season on loan after the switch to the new company, with Spanish side Racing Santander, before leaving Ibrox on a free transfer.

The two-time MLS Defender of the Year then returned to his home country to play for Chivas USA. After retirement Bocanegra join the USA coaching team under Jurgen Klinsman before moving into his current role as technical director for Atlanta United FC, who are set to join The MLS in 2017.

Kyle Bartley

The former Arsenal man joined Rangers on loan from the London club but returned the summer after the final Old Firm in the SPL.

Since his spell in Scotland Bartley joined Swansea, where his chances have been limited. He is currently on loan in the Championship with Leeds United, under former Swans boss, Gary Monk.

The USA international left Rangers just before the club went into liquidation to join Premier League side Stoke City, however he failed to make his mark at The Potters, making just one first team appearance, before being loaned out to Bursaspor and Philidephia Union.

The midfielder then joined Union on a permanent basis in January 2015, he is currently recovering from a series of injuries that have kept him out for over a year.

Rhys McCabe

The midfielder had a very short spell in the Rangers first team, making his SPL debut in March 2012, before deciding to leave upon liquidation.

He joined Sheffield Wednesday as a free-agent on a three-year-deal however, he now finds himself back in Scotland with Dunfermline Athletic, who were promoted from Scottish League One last season.

Aluko’s contract was set to expire at the end of the 2011/12 season, with Rangers having the option of a year-long extension, however the player took the club to an employment tribunal over his objection to his contract being carried over.

Having left Ibrox he joined Hull City, where he remained until his contract expired in June this year. He has recently joined Championship side Fulham on a free transfer.

Andy Little

The Northern Ireland international elected to stay on at Rangers, signing a contract extension after liquidation, however after a season in the fourth tier a fractured jaw sustained early in the 2013/14 campaign ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Little was eventually released and joined Preston North End, however further small injuries held his career back and, after an unsuccessful loan spell with Accrington Stanley, he was released at the end of last season.
