Who should Tottenham sign? Berahino or Dembele?

With Spurs looking to solidify their place amongst the league’s top four clubs, there is a strong possibly that we may have to dip into the transfer market to strengthen the squad. With this in mind and a new stadium on the horizon, we may have to sell to raise funds before we can buy.

One player who looks certain to leave this window is centre-back Federico Fazio. The Argentine defender has had a rather indifferent spell at the club, and with Vertonghen and Alderweireld forming such a solid partnership, and Kevin Wimmer seemingly above him in the pecking order, Fazio has found his first-team opportunities extremely limited. His only appearance this season so far has been in the Carling Cup defeat against Arsenal, where his performance was, and I don’t think I’m being particularly harsh here, nothing short of woeful. He was responsible for both goals we conceded and I don’t think many fans would be too upset at his departure. At 28 years of age and still some playing time left in him, I don’t think it would be unreasonable to expect a fee in the region of £5 million.

One that many expect to be completed this window is the signing of West Brom striker Saido Berahino. Harry Kane’s incredible and exhaustive work rate appears to finally be taking its toll on the young striker, and in the last game he started away against Everton, I certainly felt he looked very tired. When rested against Leicester in the cup, despite total domination, we looked a little toothless upfront without him in the side. It is no secret that we made several attempts to prise Berahino away from West Brom in the summer, and I would expect us to try again this window.

He won’t be cheap though, and it is thought that we may offer Andros Townsend in a part-exchange deal. The promising England winger is another who seems to have fallen down the pecking order at the club and has again found first-team opportunities few and far between in the last couple of months. It is quite difficult to pin point exactly what has gone wrong for him after such a bright start to his Spurs career, but my thoughts are he is simply not working hard enough in training. It appears Pochettino has a very fair selection policy and is giving lots of young players a chance to impress, and I am of the opinion that if he was working hard enough, he would definitely be in the side.

Should the Berahino deal hit a stumbling block, another striker we’ve been linked with is Moussa Dembele at Fulham. With 11 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions this season, and at only 19 years of age, he certainly seems to fit our policy of buying young, and would definitely get some time on the pitch to impress, if we were to make a move. The latest reports suggest that we’re currently ahead of Man United in the race to sign him, so it will be interesting to see what happens with this one. Wouldn’t it be fantastic though if we had the French striker, Moussa Dembele, linking up with Belgian midfielder, Mousa Dembele?! We already have another young right-back at the club whose name is Kyle Walker-Peters, so watch this space.

In terms of anyone else leaving, I’d be surprised but maybe one or two of the younger players will go out on loan. In terms of bringing anyone else in, I don’t think we should be looking to fill any other position other than striker. I’ve read that we’re trying to bring in Loic Remy on loan, but Chelsea famously don’t like to doing business with Spurs so I can’t see that one happening, especially as we’re well above them in the table currently. I think Berahino and Dembele are far more likely options and it will definitely be interesting to see which of them, if either, we can get done.
