Why Carlos’ dream can come true for Sheffield Wednesday

Wednesdayites have been singing ‘Carlos had a dream’ loud and clear across the country since manager Carlos Carvalhal arrived back in June 2015. Dreams can become reality on Saturday, May 28 should the Owls defeat Hull City at Wembley in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final.

Having waited 11 years for a play-off final, 16 years for Premier League football, and 23 years since our last Wembley visit, this is Sheffield Wednesday’s biggest game in over a decade. In fact, ‘biggest game’ does not describe in words how priceless, indispensable and enormous this final game of the season is for the Owls. A victory for Carvalhal’s men would be a pivotal point and a breakthrough era as Wednesday look towards future top flight football.

Both league outings against Hull City this term resulted in draws – 0-0 and 1-1. These tight-fisted affairs will have no meaning at Wembley as I expect a nervy mouth-watering encounter in front of a 90,000 packed full stadium.

Wednesday assistant Lee Bullen will be an essential asset in the dressing room having captained the Owls to the Championship in a 4-2 victory in 2005 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. His experience and memorable attributes will provide the current squad with an insight into play-off final victory.

Having played 48 league games in total this season, winning 20 of those outings and losing only 10, Sheffield Wednesday are far from lucky to be in the final. Finishing sixth in the league, the Owls were branded as underdogs ahead of the play-off semi-finals against Brighton. Bear in mind, Wednesday were undefeated on four occasions against Brighton (twice) in the league this season, as well as once against Derby County and Hull City respectively.

The blue and white wizards also remain the only undefeated team in the play-offs after Hull City fell victim to a 2-0 home defeat to Derby County last week.
