Wigan Athletic are poised to re-sign former England international Chris Kirkland.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper is reportedly is on the verge of re-joining the newly demoted League One side after a three-year absence from the DW Stadium.

Kirland, who earned his only international cap against Greece back in 2006, played just seven games in all competitions for Sheffield Wednesday last season before turning down a contract extension at the club.

The experienced shot-stopper could make his Latics debut this Saturday against another of his former clubs Coventry City on the opening day of the new 2015-16 season.

Despite Wigan boss Gary Caldwell already signing Walsall goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell this summer, the former FA Cup winners have also lost fellow shot-stoppers Ali Al-Habsi and Scott Carson to Reading and Derby County respectively.
