Who could replace Claude Puel at Southampton?

Southampton have little left to play for in the Premier League this season after a mixed year under the tenure of French manager Claude Puel, who is seemingly under-fire after his side’s bore draw with Hull City on Saturday.

According to reports from the Daily Star, following rows with senior members of his squad the former Nice boss is now battling to save his job at St. Mary’s.

The Saints drew 0-0 with the Tigers at the weekend after Dusan Tadic, who had previously criticised his manager over first team chances, saw his last minute penalty saved by Eldin Jakupovic.

Nathan Redmond, who was returned to the side after being dropped at Chelsea, is one of the players who has supposedly had a run in with Puel, as well as key figures Ryan Bertrand and Virgil van Dijk.

As per the report, the two more senior defenders are considering leaving the club over the summer should Puel remain in charge.

There has been plenty of debate over the style of football at Southampton this season, with the side playing a more defensive style than under Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman. However, having reached the EFL Cup final Puel has arguably taken the side further than the now Tottenham and Everton managers.

With all that in mind, should the Frenchman leave the south coast this summer, the Saints will have to once again turn to their top notch recruitment staff again.

Here are THREE managers they could turn to as a replacement…

Marco Silva

Hull City’s Portuguese saviour made his first visit to St. Mary’s the other day, however, he could have been there a lot sooner.

The former Sporting manager’s name was floated last summer after the departure of Ronald Koeman and would be a smart choice to take the hot seat on the south coast.

His home record of 41 games without a loss is outstanding and, given the Saints have managed just six home wins all season, they could do with someone who can bring that confidence to the stadium.

Frank de Boer

The former Ajax boss may have only lasted 14 games with Inter Milan earlier this season, however, he could well be a great fit at Southampton.

The Dutchman is another who was linked with the vacant role last summer and would more than likely be in the mix again.

The former Barcelona defender won four successive Eredivise titles as Ajax boss between 2010-2014 and would bring a return to a more attacking style for Saints fans.

David Wagner

The protégé of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp who has made Huddersfield one of the most exciting sides to watch in the Championship this season.

As yet unproven in the Premier League but if the club are after exciting football once again they need look no further than the German.
