Middlesbrough have completed the signing of World Cup winning goalkeeper Victor Valdes, following his release from Manchester United this summer.

The newly promoted Premier League side, who face Stoke City on the opening day of the 2016/17 campaign on August 13, have now sealed five additions ahead of Boro’s return to the English top-flight – following the arrivals of Viktor Fischer, Bernardo Espinosa, Marten de Roon and Jordan McGhee already.

Valdes, who signed a two-year deal at the Riverside Stadium, left United this summer after just two first-team appearances following his switch to the Red Devils back in January 2015 after leaving FC Barcelona.

The 34-year-old, who won the 2010 World Cup with Spain in South Africa, played eight games whilst on loan at Belgian outfit Standard Liege towards the end of last season.

Middlesbrough head coach, Aitor Karanka, told the club’s official website, “You can’t imagine how delighted I am because it’s not usual to bring players like him to recently promoted teams.

“I’m really pleased because he is really committed. All the the conversations we’ve had he knows why he is here and he is coming to add to what we have.

“He knows how strong this group is. It’s a privilege for us to be able to bring a player like this to the club.”
