Liverpool put themselves in a rather embarrassing spot of bother on Wednesday evening when, after reports claimed that Premier League rivals Southampton were set to report them to the authorities for illegal behaviour surrounding a deal for Virgil van Dijk, the club released a statement apologising to the Saints and announcing that they had ended their interest in the Dutch defender.
The Reds had supposedly been leading the way to land the 25-year-old centre-half in a deal worth £60m to the south coast club, however, with fans at St. Mary’s already not too keen on Liverpool for poaching the likes of Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Nathaniel Clyne, amongst others, in the past the statement will have been music to their ears.
However, given the nature of modern day football, especially during the transfer window, things are often never as they appear.
Therefore, when – less than 24 hours after the statement from Anfield – the former Celtic man posted a picture of him aboard a private jet seemingly pondering his current situation, it was inevitable fans on Merseyside would scramble to have their say.
