Newcastle United are reportedly considering a move for Uruguay international Gaston Ramirez.

The Magpies, who are rock-bottom in the Premier League table after eight games, could target the Southampton flop during the January transfer window in a bid to ward off relegation this campaign.

The 24-year-old, who joined the Saints from Bologna back in 2012 for a reported then club-record fee of £12m, has played just 25 minutes of first-team football under manager Ronald Koeman so far this season.

In fact Ramirez; who has 34 international caps, has made just three appearances for Southampton in the last two campaigns, with his current contract at St Mary’s Stadium due to run out next year.
