Premier League Round-Up: Leicester, Man City and Spurs win, while Arsenal are held

Leicester City’s fairytale season continued as a Jamie Vardy double saw them beat Liverpool 2-0 at the King Power and stay three points clear at the top.

Vardy’s wonder-strike just after the hour put the Foxes ahead as he collected Riyad Mahrez’s raking ball and struck a wonderful, looping volley over Simon Mignolet from all of 30 yards out. Just ten minutes later, the England international secured the points with a cool dink – this time from Shinji Okazaki’s deflected effort – to take his tally for the season to 18.

Claudio Ranieri’s side stay three points clear at the top and are unbeaten in their last six, whereas the Reds are now eighth with just one win from their last five.

Manchester City moved clear in second place with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Sergio Aguero’s close range finish from Jesus Navas’ drilled cross after 16 minutes was enough for the Sky Blues to take the points. Manuel Pellegrini’s men are now two points clear in second and unbeaten in seven, whilst the Black Cats stay second bottom, four points from safety.

Fraser Forster was the hero for Southampton in their goalless draw at Arsenal.

Arsenal dropped to fourth after only managing a goalless draw against Southampton at the Emirates.

Arsene Wenger’s side had numerous chances but were denied by an inspired Fraser Forster in goal for the visitors. The Gunners are now fourth and five points off the top, whilst Saints are up to seventh and unbeaten in four.

Tottenham moved up to third on goal difference with a comfortable 3-0 triumph over Norwich at Carrow Road.

Dele Alli put the visitors ahead after just two minutes with a tap-in after Christian Eriksen’s shot was saved.

Alli was fouled inside the area on the half hour to allow Harry Kane to convert the second and Kane was on hand to secure the points in stoppage time with a cool finish. Spurs stay five points off the top with a third straight win, whereas the Canaries are 17th with a fourth straight defeat.

Manchester United stayed in touch with the top-four with a solid 3-0 win over Stoke at Old Trafford.

Jesse Lingard’s diving header gave the hosts the lead after 14 minutes, before Anthony Martial’s sublime finish doubled the lead following a wonderful team move. Wayne Rooney’s seventh goal in as many games ended the contest early in the second-half to leave the Red Devils fifth, five points off the Champions League spots, whilst Stoke sit tenth.

West Ham stayed on course for a European place with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Upton Park.

The visitors were reduced to ten men early in the first half when Jordan Ayew was shown a straight red card for an elbow. The extra man told in the second half when goals from Michail Antonio and Cheikhou Kouyate sealed the win. The Hammers stay sixth, six points adrift of fourth, whereas Villa remain bottom, ten points from safety.

Everton eased past struggling Newcastle at Goodison Park with a 3-0 win.

Aaron Lennon’s strike midway through the first-half set the Toffees on their way, before two penalties from Ross Barkley in the closing stages – the second of which saw Jamal Lascelles red carded – sealed the win. Roberto Martinez’s men move up to 11th, whilst the Magpies stay in the bottom three.

Bournemouth came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park.

Scott Dann gave the home side the lead just before the half-hour mark, but the Eagles were pegged back seven minutes later when Marc Pugh netted. The Cherries took the points when Benik Afobe’s looping header found the net for his third in four games since he joined from Wolves. Palace drop to 12th with a fifth straight defeat, whilst Eddie Howe’s men move up to 15th.

West Brom netted a late equaliser to rescue a point in a 1-1 draw with Swansea at the Hawthorns.

The Swans took a second-half lead when Gylfi Sigurdsson finished well but, in stoppage-time, Salomon Rondon bundled in from close range. Swansea drop to 16th but are unbeaten in three, whilst Albion sit 14th but are without a win in four.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa sees his late headed effort saved by Watford goalkeeper, Heurelho Gomes.

Chelsea and Watford played out a goalless draw at Vicarage Road.

Diego Costa’s header was the closest either side came to a goal, but he was brilliantly denied by Heurelho Gomes. The Blues move up to 13th and are now unbeaten in eight, whereas the Hornets are ninth.
