West Ham United are reportedly set to win the race to sign Championship starlet Sam Byram during the January transfer window.

The Premier League side, who defeated Liverpool 2-0 at the weekend, are understood to have beaten the likes of Everton, Newcastle United and Sunderland to the £10m-rated Leeds United defender.

The 22-year-old, who has been at Elland Road since he was 12, has scored three goals in 22 appearances in all competitions for the Championship outfit this season.

Byram, who is out-of-contract in the summer, won the Championship’s PFA Player of the Month for December which only further publicised the youngster’s talent during this month’s window.

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic is keen on recruiting the White’s full-back as he has been unimpressed with the form of Arsenal loanee Carl Jenkinson so far this term.
