The success of Manchester United’s season hinges quite significantly on Wednesday evening’s Europa League final against Spanish side Villarreal.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have already qualified for next season’s Champions League having finished second in the Premier League behind neighbours Manchester City, but now face the opportunity to secure their first trophy since winning the same competition in 2017.

In the build up to the match, United have been linked with a number of new signings ahead of what promises to be a busy summer of incomings and outgoings at Old Trafford.

David de Gea, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and Eric Bailly have all been linked with departures from the club, while Solskjaer’s side have also been heavily linked with a number of new signings, one of which they will get the chance to assess on Wednesday evening.

According to Metro, Villarreal defender Pau Torres is a prime target for United this summer, and the Spaniard has refused to be drawn on speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League.

“For now I only think as a player dressed in yellow, I see my life linked to this club,” the defender told the Pure Football Podcast.

“God willing I can be in the Euros. I only want the first title for my club, for my people, and then to represent Spain in a tournament as big as this.”

United are reportedly in the market for a central defender with Solskjaer seeking a long term partner for Harry Maguire.

Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly are not seen as suitable candidates and may therefore be let go when the transfer window reopens in June.

As well as a centre back, United are also reportedly on the lookout for a goalkeeper to provide cover for Dean Henderson next term.

David de Gea is expected to depart the club this summer having been demoted to second choice ‘keeper, and United will therefore have to dip into the market for a replacement.

According to the Express, United are chasing Aston Villa’s Tom Heaton.

The article suggests that a deal has already been agreed to re-sign the Englishman and that he will become United’s first summer signing next month.

Heaton has already announced that he will leave Villa when his contract expires at the end of the season and it appears he has already found his next club.

Solskjaer has admitted that he will have to make a firm decision on his number one for next season, with De Gea and Henderson both enjoying spells as first choice this season.

It had been widely reported that Henderson would force a move away from the club if he was snubbed for the first choice role, but it now appears that it could be teammate De Gea departing the club.

Heaton joined Villa in 2019 but suffered a horror knee injury shortly after arriving and has since been leapfrogged by Emiliano Martinez in the pecking order.

Elsewhere, United could also secure the signing of a highly rated Premier League midfielder.

According to The Mirror, United will make an approach for Wolves’ Ruben Neves, with the Portugal international ‘expected’ to be sold in order to fund new signings this summer.

Neves could be one of a number of new faces at Old Trafford next season.

United have previously been linked with the 24-year-old, and a fee of around £35 million could be enough to secure the player’s signature.

Wolves endured a tough season this term and manager Nuno Espirito Santo has departed the club following defeat to United on the final day of the season.

It appears that Neves could follow his fellow countryman out of the door, and United could be potential suitors.

The club are reportedly keen on singing a new midfielder to provide balance to their midfield, with the attacking prowess of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes often leaving them short defensively.

Neves is seen as a perfect fit for the club and a deal could be agreed in the coming weeks.
