Arsenal face Premier League rivals Newcastle United in their second pre-season friendly of the summer on Sunday.

Bukayo Saka’s goal earned the Gunners a 1-0 win over AC Milan in their last outing, although the Italian side ran out 6-5 winners in a pre-arranged penalty shoot-out.

Mikel Arteta’s side will later face North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur as part of their tour of Asia, before hosting Spanish sides Villarreal and Athletic Club at The Emirates.

In the meantime, it has emerged that Arsenal are closing in on the signing of one of Europe’s most prolific strikers.

According to Fabrizio Romano, striker Viktor Gyokeres has been given the green light to undergo a medical with Arsenal ahead of a proposed move.

The journalist claims that the Swedish striker has been given permission by current club Sporting CP to travel to London for a medical with the Gunners.

Gyokeres, 27, is expected to arrive in the capital on Friday before undergoing tests on Saturday.

The Sweden international has scored 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting since joining the club from Championship side Coventry City two years ago.

Last term he netted 54 times in 52 games, and also provided 13 assists, working under now-Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim for the first few months of the campaign.

Romano suggests that Gyokeres’ move to Arsenal is almost a formality, with the London side set to get their man after a transfer saga that has lasted for most of the summer window so far.

Current Arsenal strikers Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz both struggled in front of goal last term, and Gyokeres’ arrival will add some much-needed firepower to Arteta’s squad as they bid to improve on last season’s second-placed finish in the Premier League table.
