Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going through his most difficult spell as Manchester United boss after seeing his side thrashed 5-0 by Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The mauling extended the Red Devils’ winless run in the Premier League to four games, leaving them eight points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

This has fuelled speculation that United are considering replacing the Norwegian, who initially replaced Jose Mourinho on a caretaker basis in December 2018.

According to The Mirror, the Old Trafford club are thinking about dismissing Solskjaer and appointing former Chelsea Antonio Conte.

The Italian won the Premier League and FA Cup in his two-year spell at Stamford Bridge but is currently out of the dugout after leaving Inter Milan in the summer.

If United did swoop for the 52-year-old, it’s reported that one of his first transfer targets would be defender Stefan de Vrij.

De Vrij has become a key player for Inter.

The Dutchman shone under Conte at Inter Milan to help the San Siro side win their first Serie A title in 11 years.

At 29 years of age, De Vrij would add further experience and another centre-back option to the Red Devils, who would expect to switch to a back-three with Conte at the helm.

It’s claimed that Inter value the Netherlands international, who has played 136 times since his move from Lazio in 2018, at £25million
