Julian Alvarez has completed a move from Premier League champions Manchester City to Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

The Citizens confirmed on Monday afternoon that the Argentine forward had put pen-to-paper on a contract with the La Liga giants, ending a trophy-laden spell in Manchester.

Alvarez joined City from Argentinian side River Plate in 2022 and has since played 103 times for the club across all competitions, scoring 36 goals and registering 18 assists.

The versatile attacker has been used in a number of roles during his time at The Etihad, and lifted no fewer than six trophies during his time in England, including two Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup.

Alvarez has left City after just two years with the club

Alvarez wasn’t involved in City’s Community Shield victory over rivals Manchester United on Saturday, amid fierce speculation that he was close to completing a move to Atletico.

The departure of the Argentina international – who won the World Cup in 2022 – will come as something of a surprise to many, with the attacker having played 54 times across all competitions for Pe Guardiola’s side last term.

In his absence on Saturday, young Norwegian Oscar Bobb was deployed on the flank and impressed at Wembley.

Alvarez has signed a long-term contract with his new side that runs until the summer of 2030, and he will be competing with the likes of Joao Felix and Antoine Griezmann for a starting spot in Diego Simeone’s side next term.
