With just eight games remaining of the 2022 World Cup, the return of top flight domestic football is less than a fortnight away.

The Premier League will return on Boxing Day, although the Carabao Cup fourth round is scheduled to take place during the week commencing December 19, just two days after the final in Qatar.

Arsenal currently top the Premier League table with a five-point lead over Manchester City, and they will be hoping to maintain their lead and lift the title for the first time in two almost decades.

In the meantime, it appears that Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is already plotting new signings for the upcoming January window.

According to 90min, Arsenal and Chelsea have both registered an interest in Valencia midfielder Yunus Musah, who used to play for The Gunners.

The midfielder was in sensational form for the USA at the World Cup, impressing alongside Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie.

The report claims that The Gunners and The Blues have made contact with Musah’s representatives, with a view to securing a move as early as January.

Liverpool are also believed to have shown an interest in the 20-year-old, who started all four of the USA’s games at the World Cup.

Musah, who represented England at a number of different age groups, joined Valencia from Arsenal in 2019 but could now be on his way back to The Emirates.

The youngster made his La Liga debut during the 2020/21 campaign and has since made more than 80 appearances for Valencia, and his current side are believed to be working on a new deal for the player.

The American is currently contracted to the Spanish side until 2026 with a deal that includes a release clause of around £85 million, but Valencia are trying to tie him down to a new, longer-term deal.

All interested parties may therefore be keen to get a deal done in January, with Valencia likely to offer him a new deal in the new year which would almost certainly include an increased release clause.

Musah’s versatility will appeal to potential suitors, with the midfielder able to play centrally or out wide and even at left-back.

Chelsea are likely to be in the market for at least one midfielder over the next 12 months, with both Jorginho and N’Golo Kante set to be out of contract at the end of the season.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will be looking to bolster their squad during the upcoming window ahead of a busy second half of the campaign.
