Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been handed an unexpected headache ahead of the upcoming season, with midfielder Lucas Torreira set to return to the club after a loan spell.

The Uruguayan spent last season on loan with Italian top flight side Fiorentina and it had been expected that he would remain in Tuscany, however it now appears that the midfielder will return to London this month.

As per The Evening Standard, the Serie A side have decided against making the 26-year-old’s move permanent.

When the initial loan deal was agreed a fee of £13 million, payable over three years, was decided upon to make the deal permanent, but Fiorentina reportedly offered less than half of that amount to the Gunners.

The report also claims that the midfielder, whose Arsenal contract expires next year, had agreed personal terms with the Italian club, but will now be heading back to England.

Torreira will not be staying in Florence

The player, who scored five goals and provided two assists in 31 Serie A matches this season, has blamed unnamed people ‘acting in a bad way’ for the deal falling through.

“I know I did my best to continue forming part of this club,” Torreira posted across his social media channels.

“But unfortunately there were those acting in a bad way.

“According to my understanding, they managed to stop this happening and that’s why I must go.”

Torreira is known to be unhappy at Arsenal and will now be forced to look for another way out of the club.

Arteta, meanwhile, is faced with the dilemma of what to do with a player who wasn’t in his plans for next season.
